About the Item

This is a 19th century Honore Daumier lithographic caricature/satire entitled "Une Partie de Campagne" (Part of the Campaign), plate 59 from the series "Moeurs Conjugales" (Conjugal Customs) in Le Charivari, published in Paris by Aubert et Cie in 1842. Le Charivari was an illustrated magazine that included caricatures, political cartoons and reviews. After 1835, when the government banned political caricature, Le Charivari began publishing satires of everyday life. The name refers to the folk practice of holding a charivari, a loud, riotous parade, to shame or punish wrongdoers. The most famous contributor to Le Charivari was Honoré-Victorin Daumier (1808-1879), who was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor. His work often focused on French common people, the legal profession and in particular judges, as well as politicians, frequently communicating his views on the social and political life in France in the 19th century. Baudelaire stated that "he was one of the most important men, not only, I would say, in caricature, but also in modern art". Daumier's works are found in many of the world's leading art museums, including the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The British Museum and the Rijksmuseum. This rare Daumier lithograph is presented in a silver wood frame with inner and outer black trim and a mauve mat. The frame measures 20" high by 16.25" wide by 0.63" deep. There are scattered spots, but the print is otherwise in very good condition. This print is offered in an identical style frame and mat to another Daumier caricature listed on 1stDibs, LU117325582212. They would make an attractive and interesting display grouping. A 20% discount is available for purchase of the pair.

A satirical lithograph by Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) entitled "Un Triomphe de Botaniste" (Triumph of the Botanist), which depicts a proud and nervous botanist in glasses and a wide brimmed hat awaiting the critique of a snobby critic, who is smelling his blooming flowers. The French text beneath the image roughly translates: "Here, sir, sniff me that ... here is a rose of which I am proud, it blooms for the first time .... and by dint of patience, I managed to make it acquire the smell of rhubarb! .. I must be quoted in the next Journal of Useful Knowledge" or "Look at this, sir, go ahead, smell it ... I am proud of this particularly pink flower ... it's flourishing for the first time ... with patience, and care I was able to give it an odor of rhubarb! .. . Surely I should be mentioned in the next edition of the Journal of Useful knowledge". The lithograph was published in the famous and very popular French satirical...
