About the Item

A busy 18th century river scene along Amsterdam's waterfront. One etching from the series of 10 lively nautical scenes entitled Seascapes. This image depicts six vessels, from left to right: a flute, a kaag, a spritsail, a rowboat, a ship of the line, and a wijd-or smalschip. Amsterdam: 1701. Etching on lightweight laid paper with a "BB" watermark, 6 13/16 x 9 1/8 inches (173 x 231 mm), wide margins. In very good condition with some minor uniform toning. The sheet is adhered to a mat in several spots around the sheet edge on the verso with what appears to be translucent archival mending tape. Most of the tape remnants are outside of the platemark. In good condition with one small, very minor 1/4- inch horizontal tear in lower-center quadrant of the image area, in the area of the doorway beneath the arch, very difficult to discern, and completely unobtrusive. 1/2-inch minor horizontal edge tear center sheet edge, bottom margin (outside of image area).
