Reprint, Lund Humphries, 2010., No. 174 Provenance: Elizabeth Carrol Shearer, former President of the Print Club of Cleveland He moved to Paris to become an artist, enrolling at Atelier Dix-Sept, Stanley William Hayter's engraving school, where he learned etching. He worked alongside artists including Max Ernst, Oskar Kokoschka, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. In 1935, Trevelyan bought Durham Wharf, beside the River Thames in Hammersmith, London. This became his home and studio for the rest of his life and was a source of artistic inspiration to him. He became a confirmed Surrealist and exhibited at the International Surrealist Exhibition, held at the New Burlington Galleries in London. From 1950 to 1955, Trevelyan taught history of art and etching at the Chelsea School of Art. From 1955-63, Trevelyan worked at the Royal College of Art and became Head of the Etching Department. Valerie Thornton (1931-1991) Bodleian Quadrangle, Oxford (1983) Etching 24 x 35 cm Numbered 13/75 lower left, titled below, and signed and dated lower right, all in pencil. A very good example of Thornton's recognisable and unusual etching style. Her work is deeply concerned with material, and many of her etchings focus on eroded stone, emotive landscapes, and weathered architecture. Here, Thornton draws out the exceptional texture of the Bodleian Library's local stone. Valerie Thornton was a British etcher and printmaker. She was born in London, but was evacuated to Canada with her two brothers during World War II. She returned to London in 1944 and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1949. From 1950 to 1953 Thornton studied under P.F. Millard at the Regent Street Polytechnic, then spent eight months at Atelier 17 in Paris. In the early 1960s, she moved to New York and worked at Pratt Graphic Art Center. In 1955, she succeeded Howard Hodgkin as assistant art teacher at Charterhouse School and in 1965 she became a founding member of the Print Makers Council. In 1970 she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers. Thornton was a member of The Regent Street Group (a group of nine artists who studied together at the Regent Street Polytechnic in the early 1950s). This artwork titled "Heiligenblut, Austria" c.1950 is a color etching by Austrian artist Luigi Kasimir 1881-1962. It is hand signed by the artiste's estate in pencil at the lower center. The plate mark (image) size is 7.75 x 5.75 inches, framed is 17.85 x 15.15 inches. It is framed in a wooden antique silver frame. It is in very good condition. About the artist. Luigi Kasimir was born in 1881 at Pettau, today Ptuj, Slovenia, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. He inherited his talent from his ancestors; his grandfather was a painter and a poet, and his father an officer in the Habsburg army, who later became a professional painter. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under Wilhelm Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the coloured etching, and also to his future wife, the artist Tanna Hoernes.[1] He died in 1962 in Grinzing, a suburb of Vienna.Kasimir was among the first to develop the technique of the coloured etching. Before this, prints were usually hand-coloured with the colour being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir would first create a sketch usually in pastel, he then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates, printing one after the other and applying the colour on the plate, all done by hand. Kasimir is mainly famous for his etchings, but he also produced some oil painting, as well as some pastels. One of his favourite genres was the landscape, or veduta. He demonstrated a predisposition street scenes, and tourist landmarks. He depicted places from all over Europe, mainly Italy, Austria, and Germany. He also travelled to the United States to do a series of etchings of famous sights ranging from urban landmarks such as New York City skyscrapers, to natural wonders like Yosemite Valley. Late draw, no signature, titled on the lower margin. Eugène Stanislas Alexandre Bléry (3 March 1805, Fontainebleau - 10 June 1887, Paris) was a French engraver and draftsman. He began his study of engraving at a young age, and from 1835 to 1840 he created in pen and pencil views of places in the Dauphiné, Switzerland and Auvergne. He also made large collections of etchings, such as Forests and Landscapes and the Surroundings of Fontainebleau, from his drawings or works by Dutch authors such as Meindert Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael.
