About the Item

1931. Pencil, ink and watercolor. 9 1/4 x 15 (framed 18 1/2 x 24 1/2). Signed and dated in pencil. Housed in a silk mat and an elegant carved gold leaf frame. Twelve of the artist's etchings and drypoints were included in Fine Prints of the Year between 1923 and 1935. The selection for 1931 was Place of Wailing, Jerusalem - Wailing Wall. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Percy John Delf Smith, RDI( Royal Designer for Industry), was a member of the Royal Society of Arts. A painter, calligrapher, and book designer, he studied in London and exhibited at the R.A. He worked in Palestine (1931-32)and the United States, During World War I, Lieutenant Smith served with the Royal Marines Artillery in the trenches on the western Front in France and later in Belgium. He lettered several warship plaques, one in Beccles Town Hall for the Minesweeper “HMS Brave”. He established the Dorian (later Dorno) Workshop & Studio, served as a consultant to Heinemann, and specialized in typographic design. He continued to pursue his work as a visual artist alongside his career as typographer and calligrapher. Among his most notable projects was the four year commission for the lettering of the Canadian War Memorial at Vimy Ridge. He was a Fellow or member of a number of professional societies of artists, as well as of the Society of Calligraphers and the Double Crown Club.

A fine impression printed on cream wove paper with full margins. Toning in the image, otherwise good condition. Signed in pencil. Housed in a 22 x 28-inch archival mat, suitable for framing. Born in 1818, Sir Francis Seymour Haden was an etcher, collector and surgeon. He studied at the Derby School, Christ’s Hospital and University College in London. He also studied at the medical schools of the Sorbonne in Paris and at Grenoble. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1842 and he was made a fellow in 1857. He was an honorary surgeon to the Department of Science and Art from 1851 to 1867 and in 1847 he settled into a private practice. Haden was a vice-president of the obstetrical society of London and one of the founders of the Royal Hospital for Incurables in 1850. He was the first President of the Royal Society of Painter-Echers. In 1858, Haden encouraged James McNeil Whistler to work from nature and consequently, Whistler dedicated his first set of etchings entitled “French Set”, to Haden. The etchings were printed by Auguste Delâtre in Paris and marketed, with some help from Haden, in London. In 1859 Whistler settled in London and often visited Haden’s Sloane Street home. Edition of 275 for the UK and 125 for the US. Signed in pencil. Ludgate Hill is a street that runs west from St. Paul's Churchyard to Ludgate Circus (built in 1864), and from there becomes Fleet Street. The Ludgate Hill railway station, between Water Lane and New Bridge Street, is a station of the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway. It was closed before World War II and the railway bridge and viaduct between Holborn Viaduct and Blackfriars stations was demolished in 1990 to enable the construction of the City Thameslink railway station in a tunnel. This also involved the regrading of the slope of Ludgate Hill at the junction. About halfway up Ludgate Hill is St Martin, Ludgate church. This was physically joined to the Ludgate.
