One of the most famous and powerful WW1 propaganda images, this flag-waving Ms. Liberty (aka Columbia) poster is unusual in that it urged both recruitment and bond sales. The US had just entered the war when this poster appeared and it is one of the earliest examples of myriad illustrations that were used to motivate both troops and the American public. It's designer, Howard Chandler Christy, was at the height of his fame. He earned his spurs as a wartime artist when he accompanied US troops to Cuba in 1898, an experience that stood him in good stead when he was called on to create his famed series of patriotic WW1 posters...

ABOUT THE IMAGE
A 'paifang', also known as a 'pailou', is a traditional style of Chinese architectural arch or gateway structure. It has been theorized that the paifang gate architecture was influenced by Buddhist torana temple gates. Paifang are designed with traditional Chinese architectural motifs including multi-tiered roofs, prominent supporting posts, and gracefully arched openings.
This is an unusual ukiyo-e or 'floating world' woodcut published by Watanabe Shozaburo, Tokyo, in that the subject is of an early 20th-century scene in Peking, China.

Artist George Schrieber (1904-1977) designed this war bond poster after the U.S.S. Dorado, a Gato-class submarine, was sunk off the coast of Cuba by a German land mine.
Georges Schreiber (1904-1977) commemorates the sinking of the USS Dorado submarine in this 1944 War Bonds poster entitled Fire Away for the Fifth War Loan. Schreiber sailed aboard the ship in the summer of 1943 and had a personal connection to the tragedy. USS Dorado (SS-248) was a Gato-class submarine. Her keel was laid down on 27 August 1942 by the Electric Boat Company of Groton, Connecticut and was commissioned on 28 August 1943 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Earle Caffrey Schneider. The USS Dorado sailed for the Panama Canal for use in the East Asia war effort. The submarine was sunk off the coast of Cuba due to a minefield left by a German-Nazi U Boat. TWA (Trans World Airlines) was formed in 1924 as Transcontinental & Western Air. The airline's first route was from New York to Los Angeles, followed by multiple National routes. The airline expanded to serve Europe, the Middle East, and Asia after WWII when the company was under Howard Hughes's owner's control from 1939 until 1961. Hughes was a dominant force in expanding and promoting his company's routes. The economy was vastly improving, and travel by air for business and pleasure increased, too. Posters were a crucial element in promoting this form of travel and TWA. The airline started a decline in the 1970s, ending in a third bankruptcy that caused its acquisition by American Airlines in 2001. The airline operated in 132 destinations worldwide and had a fleet size of 190.

This rare image depicts the Willem Barentsz expedition of 1597 to Novaya Zemlya, Russia. The engraving, with later hand-coloring, shows the cabin and ship of the Dutch arctic expedition of Barentsz on Novaya Zemlya (Nova Zembla), with the party being attacked (and in some cases apparently eaten) by bears and wolves. Dutch explorer, Willem Barentsz, reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya in 1594, and in a subsequent expedition of 1596 rounded the northern point and wintered on the northeast coast. Barentsz died during the expedition, and may have been buried on the northern island.
This artwork is a page from a book by 17th century cartographer and engineer, Allain Manesson Mallet (French, 1630-1706), "Description de L'Univers, contenant les differents systêmes du monde, les cartes générals et particulières de la géographie ancienne et modern." Paris: Denys Thierry, 1683.
