About the Item

Aquatint with hand coloring in oil color on smooth wove paper, 10 1/2 x 14 5/8 inches (266 × 370 mm), full margins. Moderate mat tone, scattered spots of light brown discoloration in the left side of the sheet on the recto, as well as one spot of light brown discoloration on the verso, which does not present on the recto. [Tooley 105.4; Abbey Scenery ] This image, which was produced entirely by means of lithography, was printed in oil color, and appears exactly as it was pulled from the press. It represents part of the first real challenge to the supremacy in England of the hand colored aquatint as a media, which is an older technique in which the hand coloring is applied after the image is pulled from the press. Printed by Charles Hullmandel. This peaceful winterscape depicts the 13th century hospital and abbey known as Bijloke, a section of Ghent. An impression of this work appears in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
