This vibrant abstract orange and green print is part of a group of soft-ground etchings (Artist and Model, Artist and Model (in green and yellow), These…Plants) by Howard Hodgkin. The two versions of Artist and Model are printed from the same plates, but in different colors. In this iteration, green watercolor contrasts beautifully with marigold orange, crimson, and terra cotta red. Seen in all three prints is a bust in silhouette before a window. Artist and Model is a surprising name, as Hodgkin never painted or drew from a model.
Signed by the artist with initials, dated 1980, and numbered lower center in red crayon. Soft-ground etching with hand coloring in a yellow watercolor wash and green gouache on Stoneridge mould-made etching paper. Edition 100.
Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in Artist and Model (in green and yellow) at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s.

In this highly detailed hand painted etching, artist Claus Sievert (American, 1949-2009) depicts a clown gazing into a handheld brass mirror holding a mask with matching face paint. The clown sits in what appears to be a dressing room surrounded with various costumes. This etching is uniquely hand painted in watercolor and gouache. The clown's eyes are hand drawn with added details throughout the face and hair.

Claus Sievert, (American, 1949–2009) nicknamed “The Tree Guy," was a German-born American printmaker and illustrator, who studied etching in an art college in Brunswick, Germany, in 1971. He began his career as an art teacher in Germany, teaching printmaking, art history, advertising design, and visual communication, and became a full-time artist in 1981.
Sievert created limited-edition etchings from copper plates and a hand-turned press which he then individually hand-colored.
Sievert’s work won awards, illustrated a children’s book by Leo Tolstoy, was commissioned by the Sierra Club and Golden Gate National Recreation Area to illustrate their publications, and he had his images published in several calendars. After attending the School of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, Corneille began exhibiting in 1946, then discovered surrealism. Co-founder in 1948 with Karel Appel, Eugène Brands, Constant Nieuwenhuis, Anton Rooskens and Theo Wolvecamp, of the Experimentele Groep in Holland movement which publishes the journal Reflex, anticipating the magazine Cobra (journal) which would appear the following year in Denmark, Belgium, then in the Netherlands.
He is one of the initiators of Cobra with Karel Appel, Constant Nieuwenhuis, Asger Jorn and Dotremont. "Rocket Launch" Humoristic Ink Drawing by Christopher Mark Brennan

For regulars of our online gallery, you won't be surprised to see another work by Brennan, Californian artist, very secretive about himself, whose prolific and intensely surprising work we follow again and again.
Today's featured work is a watercolor and black-and-white ink piece entitled "Rocket Launch," which has a landscape layout that ingeniously facilitates storytelling - A highly humorist piece -. signed and dated 2021.
The quality of the drawing, the simplified lines, and the extremely elaborate organization of the elements deliver a reading from left to right and from right to left of a rocket that seems to have taken off. On the left, the main character is a cosmonaut who ultimately did not participate in the “intergalactic trip.” His mouth is represented by a simple hyphen, two wide-open eyes like marbles, and the hilarious double presence of a horseshoe that will not be enough to protect him from his fears and give him enough confidence to board the rocket.
It's astounding with what economy of details Brennan brings to life the cosmonaut's dilemma: “Should I board the rocket or stay on solid ground?” By creating a back-and-forth effect from left to right, Brennan brings the "I'm going, I'm not going" dilemma of the cosmonaut to humorous life, with his helmet glued to his knees.
Brennan pays an amazing tribute to all the great illustrators who have been contributors to major magazines, such as Art Spiegelman for the New Yorker, demonstrating his astonishing ability to activate a whole tragicomic aspect in a single image.

From early childhood, he had to earn a living and sold newspapers and ran errands for local businesses. He graduated from Fordham Law School, and at age 23 was admitted to the bar. In the mid-1930s, while practicing insurance as well as law, he began oil painting and printmaking with teachers including Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Sol Wilson. He gained quick recognition and between 1941 and 1980 participated in numerous exhibitions including the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Museum and the Worcester Art Institute. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Kleinholz graduated Fordham Law School in 1923. In the 1930s, he began studying painting under Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Sol Wilson. He quickly rose to prominence with the inclusion of Abstract art in the Carnegie Institute exhibition of 1941. His painting Backstreet won a purchase prize by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Chronology His strongest influences were American Social Realists Reginald Marsh and Philip Evergood, the German Expressionists George Grosz and Kathe Kollwitz, the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, Jorge Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and the early 20th century Paris Modernists.
Described by Newsweek as a "Brooklyn-born Gauguin," Kleinholz focused on urban life in New York, Brooklyn and Coney Island, as well as intimate, social realist scenes of parents and children, watercolor paintings of flowers and birds, and sunbathers.
