The posters of the artist Albert André Guillaume are still today true jewels and works of art of historical value. is advertising posters and announcements of theatre performances could regularly be admired in public places. According to French hunting etiquette, only one stag may be hunted by each pack of hounds on any hunting day. After a long day hunt the men enjoy a tea party thrown by their woman in a dark green forest. Guillaume thrived during the international poster mania of the Gay Nineties. During this period, a collection of notable artists helped transform the boulevards of Paris into a gallery of fine art. Toulouse-Lautrec set the stage in 1891 with his famous poster, Moulin Rouge. Other fine art posters followed and the streets came alive with color. Posters soon appeared from many of the era's great masters. Artists such as Chéret, Livemont, Hermann-Paul and Mucha helped shape the Parisian landscape.

Albert Guillaume
Albert Guillaume, born in Paris, France on February 14th, 1873, was a French painter and caricaturist who became a leading caricaturist during the Belle Époque. He created theater posters as well as advertising posters that were greatly influenced by the work of one of the preeminent poster painters, Jules Chéret. While remembered for his poster art, Guillaume was also widely recognized for his oil paintings of upper-crust Parisian society. His paintings reflect the customs, habits and societal activities of his day, and are complex compositions featuring Parisian society at leisure. Guillaume is also known for his satirical drawings that appeared in Parisian humor magazines such as Gil Blas, Le Rire, L’Assiette au Beurre, and Le Figaro. The winner of a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris, Guillaume had many of his illustrations published in albums by such firms as Ernest Maindron and Librairie illustrée, J. Tallandier, including three albums of military cartoons with the preface for the 1896 edition written by Georges Courteline. It is apparent Behmer is influenced by the work of Aubrey Beardsley, though this work is no less beautiful in its execution. Little is known regarding his connections to Oscar Wilde though he is obviously an admirer and has many similarities with his private life and incarceration in prison. These works were a personal gift to Baron Detlev von Hadeln, the aristocrat and prominent art historian of the age.
Behmer is known to be, since 1903, a member in the first ever homosexual organization in Berlin and was thus probably a part of Adolf Brand’s circle, and may have contributed to Brand’s publication Der Eigene. Until now, few know that Behmer was sentenced in April 1937 by a court in Konstanz to imprisonment for two years, being arrested in Freiburg and at other locations in southern Germany for being a homosexual.
