About the Item

Handcoloured engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: C & I Honig. Set of four prints on the Antlion: ''De listige Mieren-Roover, die in eene Land-Nimph verandert'' (The cunning Ant-Lion, that changes into a Land-Nymph). The first plate (Tab. XVII) shows the Antlion larvae''s method of burrowing to catch prey. Plate 18 (Tab. XVIII) shows the Anltion larva as seen from the top, with small additional images from various sides. Plate 19 (Tab XVIIII) shows the Antlion larve seen from the bottom, with some anatomical details. Plate 20 (Tab XX) details the metamorphosis into cocoon, pupa and adult. From the Third volume, First Part (Derde deels, Ie Stuk) of "De Natuurlyke Historie der Insecten […]". Commentary and text for this work were written by C.F.C. Kleemann. Haarlem and Amsterdam: C.H. Bohn and H. Gartman, 1765-1782. Corresponding text pages available on request. Made by A.I. Rosel van Rosenhof after own design. Augustus Johannes Rosel von Rosenhof (1705-59) was a German miniature painter, and naturalist and entomologist. Roesel studied painting with his father and uncle, and later with the renowned Preisler in Nuremberg. While living in Copenhagen, he became inspired by the work of Maria Sibylla Merian. He returned to Nuremberg to devote himself largely to entomological studies and illustration, aided by his wife who hand colored his drawings and his son in law, who assisted in the publishing of his superbly illustrated scientific works. Roesel also did much of the engraving for his works.
