About the Item

Juan Reus (1912-2003) Original Vintage Bullfighting Poster September 1951 107cm x 53cm Juan Reus was born in 1912 in Valencia, where he became a well-known painter, draftsman and, notably, graphic designer of bullfighting posters. Orphaned at birth, Reus attended school until the age of seven, at which point he began work as an apprentice at a local hardware store, where he met the painter Constantino Gómez, piquing his artistic interests. He later went to work in a decorative fans shop and held his first exhibition in the bazaars of Prats and Collado in Valencia. In the 1940s, he was hired as a graphic designer of bullfighting posters in the lithographic Ortega workshop. These posters are generally characterised by bright colours and fluid, gestural movements, whereby the swish of the matador's cloak is almost palpable. This 1951 edition advertises a bullfighting event, featuring Carlos Arruza- also known as known as "El Ciclón" (the cyclone), and recognised as one of the most prominent bullfighters of the twentieth century-, Manuel dos Santos and Julio Aparicio.

1932 original bullfighting poster by Ruano Llopis - San Sebastian
By Carlos Ruano Llopis
Located in PARIS, FR
This stunning 1932 original bullfighting poster by the celebrated Spanish painter Carlos Ruano Llopis (1878–1950) was created for the summer season (Verano de 1932) at the new Plaza de Toros of San Sebastián. Known for his evocative, elegant depictions of Spanish cultural life, Ruano Llopis here captures the grandeur and festivity of the corrida. The composition foregrounds a poised woman in an orange dress with a traditional black embroidered shawl, seated serenely amid blooming roses as matadors prepare in the background. Her confident gaze draws the viewer into the scene, evoking the atmosphere of Spanish bullrings and the rituals surrounding them. The typography announces “Seis Grandes Corridas de Toros, de Abono”, listing star matadors of the time such as Vicente Barrera, José Mejías (Bienvenida), and Domingo Ortega. Ruano Llopis, a master of costumbrismo and bullfighting art, created numerous posters that became icons of Spanish visual culture. His rich painterly style blends realism and theatricality, immortalising flamenco dancers, toreros, and spectators with expressive brushwork and luminous colour. This large-format poster remains an evocative testament to Spain’s golden age of tauromachia and to Ruano Llopis’s artistry. It is ideal for collectors of vintage Spanish posters...

Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower left, 'John Fulton' (American, 1933-1998) and painted circa 1995. The original oil painting for the poster advertising the appearance of Manolo Gonzalez at the Maestranza bullring in Seville and showing the celebrated bullfighter in an emerald suit of lights, holding his espada at the ready, while deflecting the enraged bull with his red cape. John Fulton was an American bullfighter and painter who settled in Seville. Born in Philadelphia, he received a scholarship to an art school in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in the early 1950s. During this time, he studied both painting and bullfighting, killing his first calf there in 1953. In 1954, Fulton joined the U.S. Army and continued and continued painting and bullfighting on his downtime. After his release in 1956, he moved to Spain where he studied bullfighting under Juan Belmonte and performed as a novillero (novice) with some of Spain’s leading matadors. In July 1963, Fulton was sponsored by José María Montilla to take his 'alternativa' at the Plaza de toros...
