I love it's gothic architecture and sheer drama right in the centre of London. John Duffin is a painter and printmaker whose work is based on the modern environments of cities and towns, creating dynamic, cinematic images of contemporary urban life. His unique images of architecture, lighting and figures have been greatly praised and awarded, recently receiving The Most Outstanding Print Award from Sir peter Blake, he has a distinctive artistic voice and has much to say in his work about contemporary life in all of it’s manifestations. His work is in the tradition of LS Lowry in Britain and Edward Hopper in America and like these artists he creates unique views of contemporary urban life, a combination of his ability as a draughtsman, his imagination and his personal use of perspective and colour. He makes drawings and watercolours in front of his chosen subject and takes these sketches back to his London studio where he creates from them his own imaginative interpretation of the site, recreating the place anew via his own imagination. His work is redolent with influences from cinema, graphic novels and the history of figurative painting, but from this comes a vision that is his alone.

Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or her new Vachik stories, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that may or may not speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same.
The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed down. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels.
In Sonal's own words,
This work is very close to my heart, a lot of emotions are attached to this work. Some such
feelings that awakened for the first time and they were priceless. I have lived that time, felt
it very closely, whatever happened to me at that time, I have tried my best to make it work.
Kajal has a very important role, when there are children and grandmothers complete it, it is
said that by applying Kajal in the eyes of the children, the eyes become bigger. Which we
call Nazarota which is a small iron vessel.

Royal Palm With Turkish Design

Royal Palm with Turkish Design maintains the interplay between the twodimensionality of the architectural rendering and the modeled line work of the palm. The addition of a subtle fade of sky-like blue in the upper left-hand corner works with the atmospheric marks to further emphasize the illusion of volume in the palm.
Conversely, by bordering the upper half of the print with a pattern from an early Ottoman brocade, Smith-Harrison reminds us that we are not to take a representation of three dimensions as realism. The small medallion in the lower center of the print, although it also is taken from an
Ottoman brocade, doubles as an architectural element. The shape resembles the glyph-like mark used to represent a palm tree in plan view drawings.
The ornate, curvilinear large medallion is the third of the Ottoman elements.
Placed in the lower left of the print, both the shape and the etching in deep reds and blues create an allusion to a polychrome roundel. Both the shape and the placement provide balance to the colonnade and the angular rendering in the center of the right side of the print.
David Smith-Harrison studied at Utah State University and served as studio assistant to Adrian Van Stuchelen and Moishe Smith. In 1983 he traveled in Europe and studied at the Art and Design Faculty of South Glamorgan Institute in Cardiff, Wales. Before leaving for Europe, Smith-Harrison began an intense professional association as a studio assistant to artist Trevor Southey.
Smith-Harrison’s imagery is distinctive for its meticulous and studied execution and rigorous, demanding craftsmanship. The results are generally rich in subtle articulations and poetic spirit. His work is located in private collection in Japan, Taiwan, Republic of China, Spain and the United States.
