Quilt or Persian Rug Serigraph Pattern and Decoration Feminist Lithograph Print
Located in Surfside, FL
Dee Shapiro is a Contemporary American artist and writer associated with the Pattern and Decoration movement. I have seen this referred to as Hejaz. Dee Shapiro was inspired to be an Artist in her early years of education. Dee's career started in the 1970s as a pattern painter with her works of art included in the Pattern and Decoration at P.S. 1 (other artists included Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Kim MacConnel, Miriam Schapiro, Betty Woodman, Robert Zakanitch.) She researched and explored the Fibonacci Progression in color on graph paper and also explored geometric complexity of architectural designs, leading her to create the small horizontal oil paintings of cities and landscapes. Dee Shapiro became a Yaddo fellow in 2017. Dee Shapiro obtained her bachelor's degree in 1958 and Master of Science in 1960 from Queens College, City University of New York. Dee Shapiro is an artist that sees the subject on a large scale, but what she creates is on a diminutive scale. Shapiro's strength is the ability to give expressive power on canvas that makes her work seem larger than they are. Dee Shapiro has been a teacher, lecturer, and writer through career. "I have been concerned with women’s issues most of my life. I have worked to enhance the position of women in society through supporting the work of women artists. As a contributor to Heresies Magazine and a founder of a women’s cooperative gallery as well as developing a body of work that references women’s work and more currently focuses on female sexual imagery, I identify with feminist matters and affairs." Sol y dar y dad
Located in New York, NY
Visual poems, the works in Vicuña’s 'PALABRARmas' series are carefully attuned to the power of language. Many of these works incorporate wordplay, and throughout her practice, Vicuña treats words as embodied entities whose forms can be parsed to reveal subliminal meanings across a variety of languages. For the series title, Vicuña has invented the word “palabrarmas,” a fusion of “palabra” (Spanish for “word”) and “armas” (“weapon”). At the same time, “palabrarmas” also suggests an even wider range of meanings, bearing similarities, for instance, to a portmanteau of the the verb “apalabrar” (“to agree on”), and the word “más” (more). Just as Vicuña emphasizes the capacity of words to cause violence and destruction, so she also suggests that they can be potent tools of reconciliation and understanding. In 'Sol y dar y dad' (1974/2016), Vicuña again looks to language as she considers notions of truth and community, and she extracts from “solidaridad” (Spanish for “solidarity”) the word “sol” (“sun”) and the Spanish verb “dar” (“to give”). Another edition of this work was exhibited as part of 'Cecilia Vicuña...

A Painting of a Soup Can Used to Hang Here (229/250)
Located in Phoenix, AZ
silkscreen, unframed, edition 229 of 250 In 1968 Andy Warhol exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts. Since Warhol's show was seminal in the development of Pop Art, there was a lingering presence that could not be denied, even after the work was no longer in the space. Anastasi went to a sign maker and had a plaque made that read, "A Painting of a Soup Can Used to Hang Here". The reference to the soup can and the fact the sign was not made by the artist was the development of Warhol’s subject matter as well as a Duchamp reference. It was pure genius. An edition of this work was produced years later. William Anastasi is one of the founders of both Conceptual and Minimal Art. A “classmate” of Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, and Hans Haacke...
