About the Item

A striking piece by Piper also presented in the Tate collection. This print is one of an extensive series titled ‘Eye and Camera’, the first of which were made in 1967. For these prints, which are distinctly different from his topographical work, Piper uses photographic images fragmented and collaged, and juxtaposed with drawing. This is a signed original screenprint from the Kelpra/Tate Gallery portfolio of seven prints published in 1980 in an edition of 150, to celebrate the Kelpra Studio Exhibition at the Tate Gallery. The other artists were Patrick Caulfield, Gordon House, R.B. Kitaj, Victor Pasmore, John Piper, Joe Tilson and Gerd Winner. Year: 1980 Framed size: 72.5cm x 58cm x 4.5cm Detailed Condition: Excellent condition Signature: Signed “John Piper” in pencil Framing: Museum-grade oak frame, 99% UV-resistant glass to help protect the colours and the paper. Mounting: Conservation-mounted using acid-free Japanese wheat-starch paste and Japanese paper John Piper (1903 – 1992) was an English painter, printmaker and designer. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments. He trained at the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. Piper was an official war artist in World War II and his wartime depictions of bomb-damaged churches and landmarks, most notably those of Coventry Cathedral, made Piper a household name and led to his work being acquired by several public collections.
