About the Item

The 1964 "España Libre" poster is a powerful and evocative piece that embodies both the artistic genius of Pablo Picasso and the political turmoil of Spain during the mid-20th century. This original poster was created for the "España Libre" exhibition, a significant showcase of contemporary Spanish art that highlighted the resistance to the oppressive Franco regime. The exhibition traveled to various Italian cities, including Rimini, Ferrara, Reggio Emilia, and Venice, bringing attention to the plight of Spanish artists in exile and those under Franco’s censorship. At the heart of the poster is a series of etchings by Pablo Picasso titled "Sueño y mentira de Franco" (The Dream and Lie of Franco), created in 1937. These etchings are a scathing critique of the dictator Francisco Franco and his brutal regime. The series of twelve scenes in two strips depict grotesque, satirical images of Franco as a monstrous, degenerate figure wreaking havoc on the Spanish people and landscape. The etchings are a testament to Picasso's deep emotional connection to the suffering of his homeland and his use of art as a form of political protest. The poster captures the raw intensity and the surreal imagery characteristic of Picasso's work. It reflects the despair and chaos of the Spanish Civil War, as well as the resilience and hope of those who opposed Franco's tyranny. Picasso’s bold, expressive lines and distorted figures convey the anguish and resistance of a nation under siege. Beneath the etchings, the text "España Libre" (Free Spain) is prominently displayed, underscoring the exhibition's purpose: to call for freedom and democracy in Spain. The exhibition title is accompanied by a list of participating artists, many of whom were notable figures in Spanish contemporary art. These artists, like Picasso, used their work to challenge the status quo and advocate for social and political change. The lower section of the poster lists the exhibition dates and locations, emphasizing the international effort to support Spanish art and culture during a time of repression. The choice of Italian cities for the exhibition reflects the broader European solidarity with the Spanish democratic cause and the exile community. This poster is not merely an advertisement for an art exhibition; it is a historical document that encapsulates the intersection of art and politics. It serves as a reminder of the power of art to confront injustice and inspire change. For collectors and historians, the "España Libre" poster is a poignant symbol of resistance and a testament to the enduring impact of Picasso’s political art. Today, "España Libre" stands as a significant cultural artifact, representing the struggle for freedom and the role of art in shaping political discourse. Picasso’s "Sueño y mentira de Franco" continues to be a powerful critique of tyranny, reminding us of the importance of artistic expression in the fight for human rights and democracy. Picasso 1957 original exhibition poster Pâtes Blanches: Empreintes Originales
By Pablo Picasso
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1957 original exhibition poster titled Pâtes Blanches: Empreintes Originales éditées par Madoura et Gravures Rares by Pablo Picasso is a significant piece that reflects the artist's deep involvement with ceramic art and printmaking during that period. The poster was created to promote an exhibition at Galerie 65 in Cannes, France, showcasing Picasso’s ceramics and rare engravings, with a particular focus on his work with pâtes blanches, or white clay. By the late 1940s, Picasso had become increasingly involved with ceramics, producing a vast number of pieces at the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The studio, owned by Georges and Suzanne Ramié, became a creative haven for Picasso, where he could explore new forms of expression beyond painting and sculpture. His work with ceramics brought forth a unique blend of classical forms and modernist abstraction, often infusing traditional pottery with his distinctive artistic style. The term pâtes blanches refers to the white earthenware clay that Picasso used for creating his ceramic pieces. This material allowed him to experiment with various textures and finishes, which he combined with his characteristic line work and engraving techniques. The poster advertises this innovative work, highlighting the original prints and rare engravings that were part of the exhibition. The exhibition at Galerie 65 in Cannes ran throughout the summer of 1957 and offered art lovers and collectors the opportunity to view and acquire some of Picasso's rarest ceramic works and prints. It was a testament to Picasso's versatility as an artist, showcasing his ability to transcend different mediums while maintaining the boldness and originality that defined his career. The poster itself, with Picasso's handwritten details and a depiction of one of his engravings, serves as both a promotional tool and a work of art in its own right. It reflects Picasso's personal touch and his deep connection to the work he produced during this period. Today, this exhibition poster remains a coveted item for collectors of Picasso’s works and 20th-century art, representing a unique moment in Picasso's extensive and varied artistic journey. Limited edition. PABLO PICASSO (Málaga, 1881 – Mougnis, 1973). One of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century, his art left a profound impact on the development of modern and contemporary art. He was born into the family of the painter José Luís Blasco, who influenced the young artist's introduction to art. For a few years, Picasso lived in La Coruña, Barcelona and Madrid (where he studied at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts). At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th he began to travel to Paris until, in 1904, he decided to settle in the French capital. His art is traditionally divided into several periods, although their names are still disputed by many art historians: The Blue Period, The Pink Period, the Proto-Cubist Period where the influence of African art is obvious, Cubism - which is divided into Analytical and Synthetic Cubism -, Neoclassicism, Surrealism and Expressionism. Pablo Picasso and the Gaspar family met in 1955 and from that moment the Sala Gaspar became an important center for the dissemination of Picasso's art in Spain...
