It is hand signed and numbered from the limited edition of 300 - with each one, including the present work, completely unique. What makes this piece one of the most coveted of the entire edition is that it features one of the most identifiable and representative images of Mao - as each time the work was printed, the image of Mao became more distorted and abstracted. With the progression of each successive work, it becomes more abstracted; this is one of the lowest available in the edition of 300 on the market today; it is extremely rare and desirable. Other editions of this work were featured in the most recent Andy Warhol retrospective at the Whitney Museum. (see photographs). The information plaque on the wall at the Whitney Museum describes the edition as follows: "Warhol produced these works at the invitation of Billy Kluver and Julie Martin of Experiments of Art & Technology (E.A.T.), a group that promoted collaborations between artists and engineers. Using only a photocopier, Warhol instructed Martin to make three hundred sequential copies of an original drawing of Mao using each successive copy as the course for the next...Because of a device built into the machine to prevent the counterfeiting of money, Martin found that the image of Mao was enlarged by a small percentage each time and thus distorted with every consecutive copy. Warhol embraced this element of chance, and by the final, three hundredth print, the image of Mao had become completely abstract.." (see photograph of the Wall plaque)

  • Village Voice newsmagazine insert (Voice Choices) hand signed by Patti Smith
    Located in New York, NY
Patti Smith Voice Choices (hand signed by Patti Smith) from the Gotham Book Mart collection, 2001 Offset print broadsheet, hand signed in ink on the cover 14 × 11 inches Unframed This cover, hand signed by Patti Smith, is from "Voice Choices" - a feature of the legendary Village Voice magazine, dated April 2001 - five months before 9/11/2001 when everything changed in the downtown Manhattan scene. A terrific collectible for Patti Smith fans. Provenance is superb as it was acquired from the sale of the collection of Edward Gorey and Gotham Book Mart. The Gotham Book Mart was a famous Midtown Manhattan bookstore and cultural landmark that operated from 1920 to 2007. The business was located first in a small basement space on West 45th Street near the Theater District, then moved to 51 West 47th Street, then spent many years at 41 West 47th Street within the Diamond District in Manhattan, New York City, before finally moving to 16 East 46th Street. Beyond merely selling books, the store virtually played as a literary salon, hosting meetings of the Finnegans Wake Society, the James Joyce Society, poetry and author readings, art exhibits, and more. It was known for its distinctive sign above the door which read, "Wise Men Fish Here" (sign created by artist John Held Jr.). The store specialized in poetry, literature...
