About the Item

Andy Warhol BELLA poster, hand signed by both Andy Warhol and Bella Abzug and inscribed, ca. 1977 Offset Color Lithograph Poster. Hand Signed by Abzug and Warhol & uniquely inscribed by Andy Warhol Hand-signed by artist, Hand signed by Andy Warhol and ALSO hand signed and inscribed by Bella Abzug to famous book dealer Burt Britton and his wife Korby. Frame included “I’ve never met a person I couldn’t call a beauty,” Andy Warhol famously wrote in 1975. Indeed, Warhol’s portraits are almost always idealized, portraying his subject’s features in simplified, colorful shapes. Muses for Warhol’s iconic portraits include the actresses Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Ingrid Bergman; the musicians Elvis Presley, Mick Jagger, and Aretha Franklin; the political figures John F. Kennedy, Chairman Mao, and Queen Elizabeth; and the New York socialites Olga Berde Mahl, Cindy Pritzker, and Georges Marciano. In addition to his celebrity portraits, Warhol also produced a number of self-portraits. Created just months before his death, his Fright Wig (1986) self-portraits are perhaps the most famous example, capturing the artist with a shocked expression staring at the viewer. The series is also among Warhol’s top auction highlights, surpassing $30 million in a Christie’s sale in 2018. This rare offset lithograph poster is, exceptionally hand signed by BOTH Andy Warhol and the legendary New York Congresswoman Bella Abzug (1920-1998) in felt-tip pen and black ink, right margin. (The poster was published in an unknown edition; the signatures and inscription are unique) It has superb provenance and Abzug inscribed it to renowned book lover Burt Britton & his wife Korby. Authenticity and provenance guaranteed. One-of-a-kind. Hand signed by both Warhol and Abzug in felt-tip pen and black ink, right margin. Warhol's portrait illustration of New York Congresswoman Bella Abzug (1920-1998) graced the October 6, 1977 cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Abzug was the first Jewish woman elected to the House of Representatives, as well as an early gay rights activist. She ran for the US Senate in 1976, after her congressional term, but was defeated by Daniel Patrick Moynihan and was unsuccessful in a bid to be the Mayor of New York City in 1977. Warhol's portrait illustration of Abzug graced the October 6, 1977 cover of Rolling Stone magazine Measurements: Frame: 31.5 x 29.5 x 0.5 inches Print: 31 x 29 inches
