About the Item

Nude with Winter Bouquet is an exquisite 1972 aquatint etching by celebrated American printmaker Doel Reed (1894–1985), masterfully capturing a reclining female nude beside a winter bouquet and flowing drapery. With its rich tonal range and quiet intimacy, this limited-edition print showcases Reed’s hallmark aquatint technique—soft, atmospheric, and architecturally precise. Editioned 11/30 and hand-signed by the artist in the lower margins, this rare print is presented in a custom archival frame. Framed dimensions: 20 ½ x 26 ¼ x 1 inches; image size: 11 ¾ x 17 ¾ inches. This work is illustrated in Doel Reed: The Graphic Works by Harry B. Cohen and Ann L. Rogers (plate 124, p. 83), and held in major institutional collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Santa Fe, University of Wyoming, University of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University. It has been exhibited nationally, including the 147th National Academy of Design (NY), Philbrook Museum, and Society of American Graphic Artists. About the Artist: Doel Reed was a pioneering figure in American printmaking, renowned for his mastery of aquatint. Inspired by Goya, Reed developed a moody, expressive style defined by bold tonal contrasts and architectonic compositions. Born in Indiana, he studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy before serving in World War I, where exposure to gas led him to settle in the dry climates of Oklahoma and New Mexico. There, he built his own press and produced hundreds of technically brilliant, emotionally resonant prints. A longtime professor at Oklahoma State University, Reed authored Doel Reed Makes an Aquatint (1965) and was elected a full academician of the National Academy of Design in 1952. His works are held in major museums across the U.S. and remain highly sought after by collectors of American modernism. ©David Cook Galleries, LLC
