About the Item
Carlo Goldoni is an amusing black and white etching realized by Raffaello Morghen, also known as Raffaele Morghen (Portici, Naples, 1758 - Florence, 1833).
As the inscriptions on the plate reports along the margins of the oval: "Antonio Fedi disegnò / Raffaello Morghen inc."., this is an after Antonio Fedi (Florence, 1771-1838). The title is engraved on plate on the lower at the center.
This is an original print representing a classical portrait of the famous Venetian playwright (Venice 1707 -1793) with incredible draftsmanship and a very delicate and wide gradient of grey and blacks.
In excellent conditions, with a usual and light yellowing of the paper. A white cardboard passepartout is included, cm 52.5 x 37.
Raffaello Morghen, also known as Raffaele Morghen (Portici, Naples, 1758 - Florence, 1833)
Son of art, of Filippo Morghen, Florentine engraver, who moved to Naples at the invitation of King Charles of Bourbon (future Charles III). In 1779 Raffaello Morghen was a pupil of Giovanni Volpato in his Roman school. His patron was the Venetian ambassador Girolamo Zulian, an art enthusiast, who also hosted Antonio Canova at Palazzo Venezia.
In 1794 Morghen moved to Florence to teach the techniques of wood engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts, where sculptors Lorenzo Bartolini and Giovanni Duprè were also trained.
RHe reproduced the frescoes by Raphael in the Vatican and the Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.
At his death he was buried in the Church of San Martino in Montughi. In the left nave of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence is the monument executed for Morghen by Odoardo Fantacchiotti in 1854, at the expense of the engraver's students.
