"The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) presents "Pop! From San Francisco Collections", on view from March 6 through September 19, 2004. Drawn from local private and museum collections, as well as SFMOMA’s own, Pop! features some one hundred paintings, sculptures and works on paper. Included are pieces by such luminary New York artists as Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Roy Lichtenstein alongside works by California artists Ed Ruscha, Wayne Thiebaud, and Robert Arneson, among others, underscoring the role of the West Coast in this pivotal movement and demonstrating the wealth of quintessential Pop art holdings in the Bay Area. During the second half of the twentieth century, mass media and popular culture gained an unprecedented influence in America; Pop art was both a product and critique of this dramatic social change. Organized jointly by SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra and Curator of Painting and Sculpture Janet Bishop, this exhibition will focus on the influence of mass culture and the development of Pop art in America between 1955 and 1980. The exhibition is sponsored by UBS, the global financial services leader." - SFMOMA Biography: Andy Warhol (born Andrew Warhola; August 6, 1928 - February 22, 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. The Andy Warhol Museum in his native city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives. It is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.
