About the Item

'14,829 East 14th Street' Hand Colored Aquatint Etching 2015 image size 10” x 15” with the paper being larger. Edition of 3' (one of three) Hand Colored Aquatint Etching with the plate (image itself) 10 x 15 inches. On a larger piece of archival paper at approximately 14 x 19 inches. An iconic still life image featuring an urban East Bay Area scene on East 14th Street, California. Original edition of 3. The Aquatint Etching with hand coloring is from internationally acclaimed American Realist James Torlakson, whose work depicts majesty in the mundane. Torlakson’s everyday “Americana” scenes include suburban landscapes, traveling carnivals, standing fireworks booths, abandoned drive-in theaters, and autobiographical still life scenes from his Bay Area neighborhood memories and travels. Torlakson is a contemporary artist, proficiently working in oil, watercolor and intaglio etching, and employing European master techniques to create compelling works that pull the viewer in, such as the solo light from his neighborhood street at dusk. An iconic still life image featuring the “tragedy” of a dropped ice cream cone. The artist came to see dropped cones as fleeting promises of joy; offering refreshing coolness, a mixture of favorite flavors, soft ice cream gushiness, and crunch of cake cone. Whether devoured or dropped, their existence is short lived. Beside the alluring visual attributes, dropped cones represent a metaphor for the temporal nature of life, itself. And was an important sub-series for James Torlakson...
