Contemporary Still-life Prints
CONTEMPORARY STYLE
Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.
Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.
The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.
Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

Moshe Elazar Castel born in Jerusalem, Ottoman Palestine, in 1909, to Rabbi Yehuda Castel and his wife Rachel. The family was descended from Spanish Jews from Castile who immigrated to the Holy Land after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Castel attended his father’s school until the age of 13. He went on to study at the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem, where he was encouraged by his teacher to study in Paris furthering his art education at the Academie Julian and Ecole de Louvre in Paris. He was greatly influenced by European masters Rembrandt, Velasquez, Delacroix and Courbert after spending his days copying their works hanging in the Louvre. Castel returned to Palestine at the onset of WWII. The subject of Castel’s early paintings were scenes of Sephardic Jews in the Holy Land. Nicole Dikon lives and works between Oahu and Mississippi. Her work spans various media and practices, including woodcut printmaking, writing poetry, making artist books, installing edible and native gardens, and more. Dikon views her practice as a means of grounding her perspective in the principles of ecology.
Born on Maui in 1989, Dikon was raised all over the Americas. As she continues to follow a nomadic path, she grounds her art practice in whatever environment she finds herself. The key to her process lies in her attempt to mimic the cycles of a natural ecosystem. Everything in the studio has value; from the scraped-up ink to the paper scraps, they all have a function that is considered and reused in the system several times before they are reused again in the waste pile for rebirth. In doing so, each image, object, and place created serves as a portal to a right relationship with the natural world, one where we acknowledge our connectedness, not through an intelligent knowing, but a visceral and intuitive awareness.

Sonja Lamut: A contemporary illustrator, painter and mezzotint engraver, Sonja Lamut received her B.F.A. from the University of Arts, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and her M.F.A. from Hunter College, City University of New York. She is presently Assistant Professor of Illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City.
During her career Sonja Lamut has illustrated numerous books, particularly in the field of children's literature. For several decades, the American artist, Sonja Lamut has produced a number of striking works of art in the most demanding of all graphic media -- the mezzotint.
