Artist statement. "With the perspective afforded as my practice of painting moves into its fifth decade, I have occasion to reflect on the common spirit that might be running through the work, underlying the different approaches and subject matter that have emerged over the years. What I perceive most clearly in the work that is most successful, is a sense of presence or aliveness, and a rightness of form, scale and color. Somehow through luck, hard work or some combination of the two, I've been able to find and draw these qualities out of the paint. In my landscapes, that can be achieved through a certain evocation of space and light. In the still life’s, by a concentration on composition and scale and a reduction to essentials. Through it all I've learned to accept and enjoy the impossibility of having more than a momentary resting place before moving on to another attempt. I do appreciate more and more the way a painting, its spirit arising out of such humble materials, continues to rest silently on the wall, contemplating both itself and the viewer amidst the hurried buzz of our contemporary lives, offering a refuge and occasion for those who desire a deeper and more satisfying engagement of our attention. Willard Dixon's work is collected internationally and is included in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Oakland Museum of California.

Still life Chinese Ball
By Willard Dixon
Located in Burlingame, CA
Willard Dixon, who says "the charm of Still Life painting for the artist lies in the ability to manipulate ones subject matter and in the intimate, direct nature of the painting process. It is very much a studio-centric activity, complete and self-sufficient. The objects that one works with do seem to take on a life of their own, both by themselves and in their affinity for one another. They have a history, a patina, they may be new, or world-weary." The artist continues, "My collection has been substantially whittled down to an essential few over the years, yet their combinations seem infinite. There is a lengthy and persistent shuffling, adding and eliminating to find that particular combination that suddenly takes on a rightness or self-sufficiency. It is interesting how one small object of the right color in the right place can facilitate such an event, or in another case the removal of something, a simplifying. I have a feeling when composing these paintings similar to my experience of playing with my jazz group. The key, the tempo, the dynamics, all come together, and there is a point when everything clicks and propels the music into a life of its own greater than the sum of its individual parts". —Willard Dixon 'Still Life with Chinese Ball...
