Reflections IV
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this evocative print by the inimitable Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson is renowned for her mysterious and complex artworks. She was an active printmaker, experimenting with different techniques and approaches while working with some of the best print-making studios in the United States. Nevelson, whether working in sculpture or in two dimensions typically had a strict palette; almost exclusively black. While there are iconic works in white, gold, or raw wood, Nevelson almost entirely avoids color. However, during the last decade of her life, her palette expands notably with her printmaking. "Reflections IV" is an example from her 1983 portfolio, "Reflections I-V" consisting of six large-scale prints. These prints contain signature elements found throughout Nevelson's prints; ripped or collage-like forms as well as the use of fabric, lace, and toile in the printing process. However one of the strongest characteristics of the "Reflections" series is her new uninhibited use of color. Here it is used to maximum effect. This work features unexpected elements of crimson, translucent Prussian blue, and cerulean that punctuate her signature layered collage-like composition. Nevelson's late prints are truly some of her best. Over the last few years, there has been tremendous momentum in both interest and appreciation of Nevelson's work. In May of 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson's signature white construction sculptures...

Joyce T. Nagel Collagraph "Earthcore" Signed Dated Ltd Ed
Located in Detroit, MI
"Earthcore" is an abstract of a familiar image ... a view of earth sliced in half usually as an explanation of the many layers of spaceship earth. This print is more than its title. It is rich in its depth of color and texture. Upon close inspection there is much activity on the surface which continually adds to its visual complexity. The name given to this print process is “Collagraph” It is made by glueing different materials to cardboard and creating a kind of collage. During the inking process the ink will rub off surfaces that are smooth or higher and stay on surfaces that hold more ink, at edge and at lower points thus creating the image. To protect the plate through the printing process it’s sealed with one or more layers of shellac. A collagraph plate is quite sensitive and will be deformed by the pressure of the printing press. Joyce Tilley Nagel...

The Tree of Life, Signed Artists Copy
Located in Cotignac, FR
Artist's copy (Epreuve d'Artiste) of a large lithograph of a tree in colours by Yasse Tabuchi, hand signed and dated to the bottom right and dedicated to the bottom left. Yasse Tabuchi was born in 1921 in Kitakyûshû in the south of Japan. He first became acquainted with the techniques of oil painting in primary school. Here, he was also introduced to methods of copper engraving. During World War II, at only 17 years of age, he was called for military service in the Japanese army. In 1948, he returned to the University of Tokyo and completed his studies in Art History with a dissertation about French Colourism from Delacroix to Bonnard. He experienced a world of inspiration in non-fiction books, particularly in those concerning The Impressionists and Pre-Raphaelites. Tabuchi continuously searched for a more dualistic access to art, which is both technical and intellectual. In 1951, Tabuchi traveled to Paris in order to study at the Sorbonne. In 1953 he made his artistic debut at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles showing four oil works on canvas. He soon built up a reputation in the Post-War art world with his abstract works in vivid colours. During this time, he socialised with many other Japanese artists, as well as some of the members of the CoBrA group. Tabuchi soon shifted from the figurative style of his earlier Parisian works to an increasing level of abstraction. Influenced by Surrealist painting, his works were characterised by organic symbols, reflecting his ideas about the universe. After 1955 he began to experiment with colours and his palette became darker influenced by the difficulties he was experiencing at the time. In 1958, Tabuchi was invited to take part in an exhibition about Japanese abstract paintings, arranged by the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. At the beginning of the 1960s, he went on a world tour to India and Japan, where he became fascinated by the glimmering golden shades of the Orient, especially prevalent in sacred temples. Tabuchi’s fascination with the colour gold became an important element in his later works and is used as a symbol of universal divinity. The figuration is divided in different sections, inspired by Japanese painted screens...
