About the Item
This 1956 original Air France poster, titled “Réseau Aérien Mondial” (World Air Network), is a stunning example of mid-century airline advertising. Designed at a time when air travel was becoming increasingly accessible to the global public, this poster serves as both a promotional and informational piece, showcasing Air France’s extensive international network.
The map-based design features a colorful, stylized world map, with Air France’s flight routes meticulously drawn, radiating from its central hub in Paris. The striking orange and teal color scheme gives the map a vibrant, eye-catching quality, emphasizing the airline’s far-reaching presence across multiple continents. Notably, the Super Constellation and Vickers Viscount aircraft are illustrated in the lower corners, representing the cutting-edge fleet that made these long-haul routes possible.
A tagline beneath the map proudly states:
"Sur le plus long réseau du monde, les appareils les plus modernes.”
(On the world’s largest air network, the world’s best new aircraft.)
During the 1950s, Air France was rapidly expanding its operations, becoming one of the premier global airlines. The Lockheed Super Constellation, known for its elegant design and transatlantic capabilities, was a flagship aircraft for luxury air travel at the time. Meanwhile, the Vickers Viscount, one of the first turboprop airliners, introduced greater efficiency and comfort to regional flights.
This poster would have been displayed in travel agencies, airports, and ticket offices, inspiring travelers to explore new destinations via Air France. It embodies the spirit of the Golden Age of Travel, when flying was considered a prestigious and glamorous experience.
Today, this vintage airline poster is a sought-after collector’s item, appealing to aviation enthusiasts, travel history buffs, and lovers of mid-century graphic design. It remains a beautiful reminder of the era when global air travel was revolutionizing the way people experienced the world.

Hans Haacke (born in 1936 in Cologne, GER, has lived in New York, USA, since 1965) focused on "a single problem area: how the country deals with its history and national identity. More than I care for, these questions stir up emotions both in Austria and Germany." Haacke had been originally concerned with physical and biological systems. Very early on, his artistic practice also included the analysis of and reflection on socio-political phenomena. Haacke's work deals with social and political themes. He considers the debates arising from his works - fierce at times - to be an integral part of them.

Literature:
Mason, 20.
After his arrival from Columbus, Ohio in 1904, Bellows lived at the West Side YMCA. It was there that he met Eugene Speicher, another aspiring young artist who was to become his lifelong friend. Always interested in the anatomy of the human body, Bellows often satirized the various types who, while leading a sedentary life, feel compelled to devote a portion of their daily routine to physical self-improvement.
Throughout his brief but illustrious career, George Wesley Bellows created striking scenes that documented ordinary American life in all its beauty and banality. Considered an American Realist, the artist eschewed embellishment, finding inspiration in the gritty boroughs of New York City, the rocky coastline of Maine, and, later, in his friends and family. Bellows garnered early recognition for his arresting portrayals of illegal prizefighting, dramatic works executed in dark tonal palettes that underscore the brutality of the violent sport.
Bellows’ elderly Methodist parents hoped their son might pursue the ministry, a calling the extroverted athlete never received. The Columbus native competed on the baseball team at Ohio State University and also served as an illustrator for the college yearbook. In the fall of 1904—just months shy of his expected graduation—Bellows defied his father’s wishes and boarded a train to New York City in hopes of becoming a magazine illustrator like his idols Howard Chandler Christy and Charles Dana Gibson. Before leaving, he reportedly turned down an offer to play professional baseball with the Cincinnati Reds...
