About the Item
On Friday, November 2, 1979, at 3:15 p.m., Jacques Mesrine was at the wheel of a grayish-brown metallic BMW, accompanied by his partner Sylvia Jeanjacquot.
He is surrounded by BRB men on the Porte de Clignancourt roundabout in Paris.
A tarpaulin-covered truck in front of his vehicle concealed gunmen who opened fire on Public Enemy No. 1 and his companion.
Twenty-one bullets were fired.
Eighteen high-velocity bullet holes were found on his body. He was killed in possession of grenades and handguns concealed at his companion's feet. The latter was seriously wounded, losing an eye in the shoot-out, and her poodle was killed.
The death of Mesrine is the first case in which the police's claim of self-defense was called into question, as they opened fire without warning.
