Victor Levasseur
Dept. De La Seine (Paris)

1847

About the Item

VICTOR LEVASSEUR (1800-1870) Atlas national Illustre des 86 Departements et des Possessions de La France. Paris, 1847. Lemercier. Laguillermie et Rainaud, Schmitt, A Piat, et al. Sculpt. Lithographs with Later Hand-Color. 13.75” x 21” Unframed. Exceptionally attractive, these maps also contain much useful information. The highly decorative borders contain vignettes meant to convey the bounty of the lands depicted. People in their native garb, animals, vegetation and remarkable natural wonders are shown as are products made and foods harvested. Statistics and other factual information convey a sense of authority the French so greatly desired. In many of the scenes, French occupation is inferred. Levasseur was quite prolific, publishing works on cartography for almost half a century. The maps have an educational place in history. They are easy to understand in their straight forward illustrative style. Decorative cartouches were used throughout the centuries, but Levasseur took it to another dimension by sometimes taking up twice as much space with his vignettes as his cartographical information. In this way he was able to insinuate the influence of the French. His was another great example of the conceit of the cartographer. References: Tooley. Maps and Mapmakers. Crown. New York, 1978. 89.
