About the Item

This beautiful minimalist sculptural work explores the evocative power monochrome color. Originally working as a painter, Thompson focused on Minimalism. In his sculptural work, monochrome serves as format for color exploration. The actual medium is urethane on polyurethane block. Thompson’s current three dimensional work relys on the objectness of painting. The forms are hand-carved from dense polyurethane blocks (HDU) and then spray-coated with roughly twenty layers of automotive primer, custom-mixed color, and clear acrylic urethane. They are typically wall mounted and in some cases, grouped in constellations. All of the sculptural work is executed in the artist’s studio and done without the aid of design software or industrial cutting machines He studied painting and sculpture at Carnegie Mellon University. His works are in important museum, public and private collections worldwide, including: The Abbey Group; BankBoston; Butler Institute of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Fogg Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; New York Public Library; Perkin Elmer and Rose Art Museum.
