About the Item
Abstract and stylised, the bent wooden sculpture is made of black walnut with a red limestone base. The sculpture represents a swan in movement on water .The swan symbolizes love, grace purity and sincerity. In Japan, a legend tells that the swan is a bird sent by the children as a peace messenger. The elegance and purity of the lines are reminiscent of Native American art from Western Canada including that of Benjamin Chee Chee.
Poetry in Motion
The grace and beauty of birds in flight has inspired a great of variety of artistic interpretations. Eric Tardif's wood sculptures capture the elegant and graceful movements of birds through abstract expression. But unlike most abstract art, Tardif's designs draw from a lifetime of close observation of these feathered creatures. Eric's close encounters with birds inspired a creative desire to convey their beauty through art. To achieve this, Eric adapted an ancient technique called "steam bending" to realize his visions. Steam bending is a process in which heat vapor is used to make wood slats pliable for builders. It was originally used to build boats and bows, as it allowed the wood to be shaped into curvaceous structures. Eric saw in this technique the perfect medium for his artistic ambitions, and he began experimenting with different kinds of woods such as walnut, maple, ash, and cherry.
The results of his labor are exquisite abstract sculptures that reveal the gracious shapes and forms. As Eric himself explains, “Each of the pieces I create is produced to reveal the intricate poetry of bird life in its many forms. I have always aimed, in my interpretation and production of art, to render the sacred space of a secular world into sculptures”

Eric Tardif
Éric Tardiff creates provocative and dynamic outdoor sculptures. The Quebec artist’s abstract work is designed to actively engage the viewer. “Playful while being contemplative, my work offers the viewer the opportunity to observe and react to the angle and the color of each component on its own terms.” Éric Tardif Native of Kamouraska, son of the Bas Saint-Laurent, it is by creating photo-graphic atmospheres at the limit of figuration and abstraction that Eric Tardif sought to translate the impression of wide-open spaces and horizons without end. Having initially chosen Natural Sciences as his first passion, he subsequently studied in the arts, including sculpture, to explore his talents. More and more, he decided to express his vision of things, and it was within the framework of his sculpture lessons that the idea of linking the dimension of movement and space was developed. Through his research and his discoveries on a technique of folding wood with steam, an avant-garde technique and not traditional in Quebec, he arrived at a singular mode of expression where the movement of his works seems to register in all lightness. He has received grants from CALQ and SODEC for several years. He has more than 100 exhibitions to his name around the world, and his work can be found in 10 galleries across North America.
