About the Item
Kuniko Maeda, Peony
Paper, acrylic paint (front), kakishibu paint (back)
40 x 40 x 8 cm
2023
Combining paper cut-outs, acrylic paint and kakishibu (persimmon tannin lacquer), Kuniko Maeda creates elegant, and delicate airy forms, bringing a stunning palette of colors to her work. She draws her inspiration from birds feathers, source of poetry, beauty and lightness.
The paper sculpture is held in place by nylon threads in a wooden box lined front and back with anti-reflective glass (x2), allowing it to be seen all around.
The box allows the sculpture to be displayed on a table or a plinth. It can also be hung on a wall, with two fasteners on the back of the sculpture (already installed).
With the kakishibu technique, Kuniko Maeda illustrates how Japanese culture has valued the use of natural materials for centuries.
In this traditional technique, the juice of the acid (unripe) persimmon is extracted to dye various materials, including paper, textiles and wood. Kakishibu is prized for its ability to produce a wide range of hues, from orange-brown to darker brown.
Objects dyed with kakishibu become more beautiful over time, following exposure to the sun, which can lead to gradual, delicate oxidation, deepening colors and improving resistance to external elements.
Kuniko Maeda is a London-based Japanese artist who works primarily with paper, leather and textiles to create artworks and installations for public and private spaces.
She specializes in sustainable textile design and incorporates traditional Japanese techniques with digital technology. By exploring the possibilities of materials and their unique properties, she enables materials to speak and embrace natural abstraction.
She draws inspiration from our everyday environment and everyday objects, which tend to be overlooked and forgotten in a hectic urban life.
In June 2023, one of her pieces, Columbidae, was selected to embody the visual of the emblematic piece for the 6th edition of the Révélations show, held at the Grand Palais Ephémère in Paris from June 7 to 11, 2023.
The work will be packaged in a made-to-measure wooden crate produced in a specialized workshop, with an interior support specially designed for fragile works and long-distance transport.

Pierre Coquet - Abstract Composition in white shades
Reference number A202
Framed with a natural oak floated frame
40 x 45 cm (45 x 50 cm frame included)
This work is painted with oil on a board. It is signed and dated 83 in the bottom right.
Pierre was very sensitive to abstract paintings. He did a lot of abstract works melting colors and shapes in different atmosphere and style. Nevertheless he could come back to figuration and again to abstraction with no precise period of time.
Provenance : Workshop of the artist
Pierre Coquet (1926-2021) is a French painter who was born in Limas near Lyon, France.
He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon in 1942 and followed the teaching of Antoine Chartres, Henri Vielly and René Chancrin. He won a prize in 1945 and joined a movement that wanted to be outside of any school whose name ends with “ism”, (like impressionism, cubism…) between figuration and the renaissance of Abstract Art, bringing together young generations under thirty and eager not to submit to any technique. The “Sanzism” (literally without « ism ») will bring together, among others, painters: James Bansac, Roger Bravard, André Chaix, Jean Mélinand, Paul Clair, André Cottavoz, Pierre Doye, Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, André Lauran, Edouard Mouriquand, Pierre Palué, Paul Philibert-Charrin, Antoine Sanner and Françoise Juvin. The latter will become his wife in 1948.
In 1949, he participated in an exhibition in Geneva, at the Musée de l'Athénée, entitled "Eleven French painters" with Jacques Truphémus and Jean Fusaro. Françoise and Pierre moved to Paris in 1950. There he met Alexandre Garbell, who encouraged him and whom he attended classes in his academy on Boulevard de Clichy. Working as an art teacher at the Corvisart school in Paris he painted a lot beside this activity.
His main subjects are “assemblages of objects” which evoke the memory of Giorgio Morandi, the roofs of Paris, still lifes, characters in situation, and abstraction. This sincere and modest man, turned inward in a climate of deep meditation, likes to express his feeling that “all painters encounter the same difficulties in wanting to express unspeakable emotions with painting. Everything is possible, at the condition it is true ” use to say Pierre.
I have known Pierre for a long time and organized several exhibition with their paintings. I am now taking care of the whole workshop providing beautifiul figurative and abstract works, paintings and many drawings with various sizes. Pierre was always working in his workshop, everyday, he needed it, painting was something vital to him.
