Gerome Kamrowski was born in Warren, Minnesota, on January 19, 1914. In 1932 he enrolled in the Saint Paul School of Art (now Minnesota Museum of American Art - MMAA), where he studied with Leroy Turner, and Cameron Booth. Both Turner and Booth had been students of Hans Hofmann, and were also associated with the Abstraction-Création group in Paris. It was from these peers that Kamrowski was introduced to a "kind of expressionist cubism." In 1933 Kamrowski was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League, where he would study in New York under Hans Hofmann. Unfortunately, immigration problems had prevented Hofmann from assuming his post. Nevertheless, Kamrowski decided to remain in New York for a short time, to attend classes taught by George Grosz. After a few weeks, he returned to St. Paul, and found a position in the mural painting division of the Minnesota FAP/WPA (Works Progress Administration). In 1936 he contributed “Synthetic Cubist Style” frescoes in the Northrup Auditorium of the University of Minnesota.
In 1937 Kamrowski went to Chicago to study under László Moholy-Nagy and Alexander Archipenko at the New Bauhaus (now Illinois Institute of Technology's Institute of Design). There he was exposed to new and interesting ideas regarding the role of nature in art and the "geometric basis of natural form".
In 1938 Kamrowski received a Guggenheim fellowship to attend Hans Hofmann's summer school in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He then relocated to New York where he met William Baziotes. Together they shared a fascination in Surrealist automatic writing, and both artists explored its possibilities in their paintings. Kamrowski was particularly drawn to Surrealism's fundamental appeal of intuition over intellect. He was interested seeking a process that "binds all things together...a kind of cosmic rhythm".
Throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s while living in New York, Kamrowski became an integral part of the emerging surrealists. In 1942, the artist Roberto Matta attempted to form a group of artists to investigate new applications for Surrealist methods. An artist from Stillwater, Oklahoma working primarily with wood and metal. I received my BFA in sculpture from the University of Central Oklahoma where I had the freedom to experiment with furniture as art.
After finishing my bachelor’s degree, I went and worked as a custom cabinet maker for 5 years. The cabinetry helped refine wood working skills and techniques. I then took advantage of an opportunity to further my skills traveling to Japan and learning traditional methods of wood working used for centuries. Upon returning back to my home town here in Stillwater, I have set up my woodworking studio and am focusing on merging eastern philosophies of minimalism and sculptural form into a functional beautiful artistic statement to add to the quality of our daily lives.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
What started as a childhood fascination with shapes and sizes has turned into an artistic endeavor for one Stillwater man who has discovered a unique way to use wine, wood, fire and glue to bring his sculptures and furniture creations to life.
Morgan Robinson says he was always intrigued with the reflections he saw in the school bus windows as a child. “I wasn’t as interested in what was outside the window as I was in the images the sunlight was creating on the window,” Robinson said.
That interest never waned. Indeed, it grew into a passion that would lead Robinson to Mexico and Japan seeking new ways to turn the images in his mind into the creations he would eventually show in art galleries in other countries and at home.
Studio Artist Beginnings
As a college student at the University of Central Oklahoma, Robinson studied jewelry making. He learned to work with metal designing and making small items such as pendants. He soon moved from jewelry to metal castings and decided to pursue metal as a medium for his art. Eager to discover new tools and techniques, he took a job at a foundry in Ponca City.
“I was still trying to understand metal,” Robinson said. “I went to Mexico and worked in a foundry there when I was 21. I learned to use tools I would have never been exposed to here.” Soon he was casting tables...

Stan Olthuis looks for expressive opportunities in found and harvested raw material – wood, stone, metal, rubber – and brings a fabricator's expertise to the work of making minimalist, joyful sculptures. Geometry is key, as are a sense of play and an adept's feel for sacred energies.
His work is exhibited and collected internationally, including private and corporate commissions in Canada, United States, France, Japan and Norway. "Home" is an abstract artwork by Stan Olthuis composed of acrylic paint on baltic birch panel. Home measures 40" high by 30" wide by 1" deep. From Stan Olthuis – "My work has always involved tactility and expressionistic energy. I visualize the story and imagery simultaneously, allowing the work to surprise me and come to life as I work. I am almost careless in how I use color and texture, facing the fear of improvising on-the-fly. I like to leave the obvious raw record of the process visible, but I believe a mystery remains."
Stan Olthuis looks for expressive opportunities in found and harvested raw material – wood, stone, metal, rubber – and brings a fabricator's expertise to the work of making minimalist, joyful sculptures. Geometry is key, as are a sense of play and an adept's feel for sacred energies.
His work is exhibited and collected internationally, including private and corporate commissions in Canada, United States, France, Japan and Norway. Stan is represented by Gagné Contemporary in Toronto and New York City, and has select works available through the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), and Motokawa Gallery in Japan.
Stan Olthuis' formal education began in Chicago with Henk Krijger, the celebrated master printmaker, type designer, painter and sculptor.
