About the Item

"Random Thoughts" is a painted steel sculpture by Ralph Wickstrom. The sculpture consists of a circular form with a zig-zag piece within it and an additional off-shooting part on the top. The color is a light maroon. 19 1/2" x 13 1/2" x 5" sculpture Ralph Wickstrom is a retired college professor who has lived in Ripon, Wisconsin since 1961. His interest in and involvement with art over a period of more than three decades has recently led to a change from primarily collecting to producing artwork. Since retirement, he has devoted most of his productive effort to the making of indoor and outdoor metal sculptures from scrap steel. Ralph finds it challenging and deeply satisfying to give new life to scrap steel, or as sculptor Isamu Noguchi eloquently put it, to "reincarnate it as a creation." Universally appealing geometric forms and abstract shapes are the basic elements used in his compositions. Wickstrom received his BS from Morningside College, Iowa in 1948 and his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1950 and 1952. From 1961-1990, he served as a professor at Ripon College in Wisconsin.

Yet, at first glance, the viewer may not catch the whimsical dancing figure. Arms outstretched and hollow head with a triangle body, the sculpture resembles the stick figures so often seen on restroom signs...
