About the Item

This contemporary tabletop vessel is by Steven Heinemann. This major Canadian artist is widely known for redefining the boundaries of ceramic art. Steven Heinemann’s superb technical craftsmanship has won him international attention. He uses slip cast molding—a technique that allows him to hand build shapes that cannot be easily made on a potter’s wheel. The elegant, elongated, organic form of this piece is inspired by nature. Its rich, red, shiny surface is achieved through meticulous layering of glazes. A fine black line defines the edge of the vessel. “This ‘behaviour’ of the material which does not seek your permission, already suggests to me a dance of nature, mind and culture.” Steven Heinemann “The ceramic sculptures of Steven Heinemann are astonishing, mysterious enigmas inviting thoughts about being and non-being, the tangible and the intangible. His thirty-five-year practice is deeply rooted in the principles of the 1960s studio craft movement, which prioritizes process, material, and the non-functional object to create autonomous sculpture.” Dr. Rachel Gotlieb, curator and historian Steven Heinemann earned an MFA from Alfred University, NY, in 1983 and has taught in Canada and the US. Heinemann has exhibited continuously since his first solo exhibition at the Ontario Crafts Council in 1982. His work is held in museums the world over. Heinemann has received many national and international awards, including the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada’s highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft.

Giacomo Onestini ceramic sculpture Italy 1970
By Giacomo Onestini
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Beautiful ceramic sculpture designed by Giacomo Onestini made in his own atelier in Italy in 1970. It has a combination of matte and shiny glazed surfaces. The back and sides of the sculpture have a textured surface with shades of gray, green, and sometimes turquoise. On the front, there's a carved-out section that's smooth and glazed with red and gold hues. It's a very appealing and intriguing piece. You can find the artist's signature, "Onestini," on the side of the sculpture. This piece was created in the artist's personal studio. Very nice large sized, heavy piece and in excellent condition. After graduating as a master ceramist, Onestini moved to San Marino where he found employment at the "Marmaca" ceramics factory. Around the end of the 1950s, he moved to Salerno and began working with the "Ernestine...

All That Remains, Abstract Sculpture (Ceramic and Steel), 2020
By Fred Klingelhofer
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: I constructed this piece from the setters I used to fire the ceramic pieces of another sculpture along with some of the glaze test tiles. When I saw these "scraps" sitting together there was a visual harmony that suggested a new use for them. Keywords: abstract, welded metal, Artist Biography: Fred Klingelhofer, a primarily self-taught artist, grew up in a Chicago south side neighborhood. He received a BS degree in physics from Roosevelt University and worked as an engineer for 30 years. During those years he enrolled in art workshops and classes at a nearby community college completing courses in figure drawing, 2D and 3D design, ceramics, sculpting the figure, welding and metal sculpture. His focus has been on creating sculpture since 2006. Fred has exhibited his sculpture in a number of group exhibitions with Chicago Sculpture International, Art Prize (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Sculpture in the Park (St Charles, Illinois), Sculpture Walk Sioux Falls...
