About the Item
Float glass, cut, ground, polished and assembled. Each piece is unique in it's design.
Tom Marosz's art is the culmination of skills, craft, and the attempt to manipulate light in ways that no one expects. His fascination with light is evident in every piece he makes. One of Marosz's favorite things is to play with the manipulation of negative space, which is a major element that explains the “story” of his sculptures. Often it is the major element that explains the “story” of his sculpture; most notably, “Tear For Henry” is dedicated to Marosz's father. Some pieces are a direct reference to an exact moment in his life, while others are reflections of his attempt for absolute perfection in the process of his craft.

Tom Marosz
Tom Marosz’ drive to test the limits of manipulating light began early on; teenage interests in photography and optics yielded early holography projects. His efforts were deemed so cutting edge during the 1960’s that he ended up collaborating with the Navy Electronics Lab team in Point Loma. After 15 years in the construction business as a glazing contractor, doing what others said you could not do, Tom turned to art using his cold working, cutting and polishing skills to create the glass sculptures you see here. Many of his current works are created using optic crystal, dichroic coatings and kiln fusing. Tom’s broad skill set has enabled him to create a number of large scale installations. The Vantage Pointe sculpture, a lit glass winged water feature standing over 18′ tall, is stationed at the entrance to downtown San Diego at the corner of 10th and A Street. Another, created for the Law School of British Columbia, spans 4 stories and features 450 suspended glass spheres. In 2013, Tom created and installed several glass features for the remodel of the Viejas Hotel and Casino. The largest of these features jumbo glass panels, fused in Tom’s massive kiln, weaved with colors and textures reflective of the Viejas Kumeyaay Indian culture. Aside from Tom’s public collections his unique sculptures are presently enjoyed in many private collections worldwide.

Abstract Cast Glass Sculpture, 'Maina', 2013 by David Ruth
By David Ruth
Located in Oakland, CA
'Maina' is a contemporary abstract cast glass sculpture by David Ruth from his Internal Space series. It features painterly brushstroke formations in glass called trails. Trails are created through rolling molten glass into various forms and shapes. They are then placed within clear glass and fused into one large piece through kiln casting. This technique creates a layered, suspended, and vibrant three-dimensional space within.
About the Internal Space Series:
David’s experiments with sheet glass and fusing led him to try to make the glass thicker to see more interior space. It was during this time a professor pointed out that he was working with a metaphor, for which the internal space of the glass was the equivalent to the internal life of the mind. This became his operating mantra but also forced him to come to terms with the casting of thick sections.
“Creating those internal spaces came with some problems. Other than telescope mirrors, I did not know that anyone annealed glass in a kiln for more than a day or two. When pieces cracked after five...
