About the Item
Willy Weber, (Swiss, 1933-1998)
Verchromte Platte
Stainless steel sculptural construction,
dated 1977, signed to the steel.
Dimensions: 12" ht. x 13" wd.
Sculpted chrome sheet Hand signed on the verso in marker: Willy Weber [with accompanying Willy Weber sticker]; His mature works were chromed steel wall-hung mod relief sculptures, created using explosives.
Willy Weber (born 1933 in Bern died in 1998 in Boll-Sinneringen) was a Swiss iron sculptor and visual artist. After a commercial apprenticeship, Weber lived in Algeria for a year and trained as a painter from 1956. From 1958 to 1962, Weber created surrealist oil paintings. In 1960, Weber shot with a gun through a brass plate. This work of art formed the basis of the "exploded reliefs". When Otto Piene , Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker appeared in public with the artist group ZERO in Düsseldorf in 1962, Weber created the first explosive sculptures, steel plates deformed with dynamite. These were initially painted, but from 1967 onwards they were chrome plated. He has worked in chromed steel and corten steel. His work is a sort of Punk Surrealism.
In 1965, Weber wrote a manifesto about his actions: ...The art of our cultural epoch... must reflect the dynamic element of explosion, as an expression of time and culture, leading to expansion into the universe and the future.
Weber presented his own works at Howard Wise in New York City in 1969. The Swiss Confederation then donated the large-format relief "Apollo X" to the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Weber represented Switzerland at the São Paulo Biennale in 1969 and at the Venice Biennale in 1972. He retired to the country and devoted himself primarily to philosophical work. He died in 1998 from the effects of an illness.
Works by Weber can be found in the Onstand Collection in Norway, the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, the Nelson Rockefeller Collection also in New York, the Ted Weiner Collection in Fort Worth Texas , the Helsinki Art Museum , the Museum Soto in Venezuela, the Cincinnati Art Center, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in Buffalo. Solo exhibitions have taken place at the Howard Wise Gallery in New York City, at Gimpel and Fils in London, the Galerie Krebs in Bern, and the Galerie del Naviglio in Milan, among others.

The work is all hand-made, a unique series of only 6 works; signed and numbered on the back. Certificate. (3/6) Practical hanging mechanism on the back for easy handing on the wall.
This Belgian designer reinvents the mirror by giving it a graphic role, like in his sought after "Hommage to Vasarely" whose projected lights create luminous tesserae onto walls and ceilings. His artwork invites you to escape into the imagination and the serenity offering a moment of intimacy. Through the subtle blend of poetry and fantasy on on head and the aesthetics and ergonomics on the other, Oliver De Schrijver could perfectly assume been gate design...
