About the Item

Ermine by Almaric WALTER (1870-1959) Sculpture made in green and brown opaque glass paste representing an ermine signed on the base " H. Bergé sc. " et " A. Walter Nancy " France around 1920 height 10 cm length 25,5 cm width 10,5cm It should be noted that until 1914, Walter's pieces were signed only Daum Nancy, Almaric Walter then supplying his models to Daum by contract. The signature A. Walter Nancy appeared from 1920 when the artist set up on his own. Biography : Almaric Walter (1870-1959) was a French glassmaker mainly known for his glass paste works. He received his initial training at the Manufacture de Sèvres. Installed on his own, he produces glass and earthenware pastes, of which few have reached us so far. His fame is recognized at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris where he won a prize. It is most likely on this occasion that he is conquered by the glass work of Albert Dammouse and Henry Cros. In 1905, Almaric Walter joined the Daum glassworks, which brought him notoriety in Nancy and Paris. With the help of Henri Bergé, chief designer at Daum, he creates more than 100 models of glass-colored glass paste in the Art Nouveau style. His collaboration with Maison Daum lasted until 1914. In 1920, Walter set up his own studio rue Claudot in Nancy. He develops, including with Henri Bergé but also other modellers, nearly 500 different models. Due to the complexity and slow implementation of the glass paste technique, the number of copies per model is always small. Walter makes pieces from the works of sculptors Alfred Finot, Jules Cayette, Joe Descomps-Cormier, Auguste Houillon, Auguste Rodin ... Walter's studio closes in 1935, most likely because of changes in artistic tastes and lack of profitability of the case, the production costs remaining all important because of the technique used, especially after the great global economic crisis of 1929. From that date, Amalric Walter no longer produces any glass paste. We know very little about his life from that moment on. He left Nancy in 1940 during the German occupation and then returned in 1945. He died in 1959, blind and in great destitution.

One of Cowan's clients, an interior designer, requested plates decorated with different outdoor activities. Others in the series included "Swimming," "Tennis," "Polo," and "The Hunt."
