"La Cothurne" 1901 Gilt Bronze Approx 21.5" High (to raised hand) Signed and Dated Foundry Mark "Susse Freres" Originally modeled in white biscuit porcelain this Greek dancer is a from a set of eight created for a dining table. They were immediately successful when they were exhibited in the Sevres pavilion at the 1900 Exhibition. Individual figures could be ordered and "La Cothurne" proved the most popular. Their success led to the firm of Susse buying the right to cast versions in metal. Agathon Leonard (1841-1923) is one of the well-known French Art Nouveau sculptors. Born in Lille in 1841, he first studied there before moving to Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Eugene Delaplanche. He gained recognition at the annual Expositiones Universelles, winning a Silver Medal there in 1889 and gold in 1900. His most important piece, Jeu L'echarpe, was the best known series of Sevres production at the turn of the century and sold out at the 1900 Expo in Paris and later was given as a gift by the French Gov't to Nicholas II at the Hermitage. His bronzes were cast at the Susse Freres Editeurs Foundry. He worked also in marble, quartz and ivory. He also produced Art Nouveau medallions...

Arman Original Bronze Violin Sculpture Edition: HC 1/2 Signed and Numbered Bronze Dimensions: 36 x 50 x 24 cm Arman is a painter who moved from using objects for the ink or paint traces they leave to using them as the painting itself. He is best known for his "accumulations" and destruction/recomposition of objects. In October 1960, Arman, Yves Klein, François Dufrêne, Raymond Hains, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely and Jacques Villeglé, and art critic and philosopher Pierre Restany founded the Nouveau réalisme group. Joined later by Cesar, Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Christo, the group of young artists defined themselves as bearing in common their "new perspective approaches of reality." They were reassessing the concept of art and the artist for a 20th century consumer society by reasserting the humanistic ideals in the face of Industrial Expansion. In 1961, Arman made his debut in the United States, the country which was to become his second home. During this period, he explored creation via destruction. The "Coupes" and the "Colères" featured sliced, burned, or smashed objects arranged on canvas, often using objects with a strong "identity" such as musical instruments (mainly violins and saxophones) or bronze statues. The son of an antiques dealer and amateur cellist, the artist absorbed an intense appreciation for music, the art of collecting and the cultivation of discriminating taste from an early age. After studies at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, Arman decamped to Paris to study art history at the Ecole du Louvre. His work in these early years focused on abstract paintings inspired by the work of Nicolas de Staël. Louis Sclafani’s exploration in glass began as an undergraduate majoring in ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, New York. In 1976, Louis spent a semester abroad studying ceramics at the Siena School of Art, Italy. On a field trip to Venice, he found himself fascinated by the glass of Venice and the Island of Murano. He secured an apprenticeship with renowned glass sculptor Loredano Rosin and returned to Venice soon after to launch deeper into the world of glass. While living in a tent on a roof top behind Loredano’s studio, he learned from the best and found his own artistic direction. This “summer” job would last three years. Wave is a unique glass sculpture created in the Kiln with cut, cast and polished uranium glass. The blue and green tones illuminate in the light to create movement as one sees in the ocean. Petr Stacho uses hot-glass techniques in order to create objects of sculptural character, decorated in a sophisticated manner while all the lines and shades of the surface are the result of thoughtful designs and elaborate work with liquid glass. Glass art combines hard physical work with craftsmanship, manufacturing technology with subtle mental processes. Stacho apparently chose the triangle as a symbol of intuitive search for perfection and a balance of all these elements of glass art – the ideal perfection of the artist’s vision which is being constantly disturbed and interfered with by human imperfection and the random interventions resulting from the unpredictable nature of the glass itself. Basic geometrical forms are invaded by the artist’s intent while retaining a striking resemblance to patterns defined originally by Mother Nature – melting ice or freezing liquid, meteorite minerals or transparent substances, all colliding in a dynamic environment of physical natural relations and human imagination. Postgraduate work followed at San Jose, San Diego State at Long Beach, and Palomar College. Oropeza’s contribution to public art in Los Angeles can be seen in a ceramic mosaic covering the 2 story Self Help Graphics Workshop building located at Ceasar Chavez and Gage streets in East Los Angeles. Oropeza donated his time and artistic talent to complete this multi-year project. The second phase of this project was the creation of a Virgin of Guadalupe shrine, for the community.
