Edwards’ practice expresses the power and determination of human endeavour. He
draws inspiration from natural forces, with his powerful masculine figures often
bearing the surface texture of time enduring landscapes. Edwards uses this external
inspiration to explore very internal themes of fortitude and self-discovery.
Edwards’ sensitive hand as a sculptor incorporates classical ideas about the
sculpting process. In both Self Made Man and Creation of Self, a figure carves
himself out of a mass of rock, reminiscent of Michelangelo's idea of seeing a form
within a piece of marble and ’setting him free'. This is deeply metaphorical, reflecting
timeless themes of purity, effort and self-belief. Poetic concepts such as these run
throughout Edwards’ practice, with each piece subtly informed through mythological
storytelling, creation beliefs and philosophical thinking.

Felipe Castaneda (Mexican, b.1933) was born in 1933 in La Palma in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. His artistic career began at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City where he became an assistant to the renowned sculptor Francisco Zúñiga (French, 1867–1947), Zuniga helped the artist realize his aptitude for sculpting and carving. Castañeda finished his studies in 1963, and by 1970, he was showing his work in exhibitions. This 20.47" x 9.44" x 10.62" bronze sculpture by Armenian artist, Arman Hambardzumyan, was created in 2013 and depicts the tragedy of the Greek goddess Danae. The artist's interpretation of this classical Greek myth, where an oracle foretold Danae would bear a son who would kill her father, and in an attempt to evade this, Acrisius, her father, imprisoned her. The king of Gods - Zeus, desired Danae and came to her in the form of golden rain. The oracle came true, Danae conceived a son, Perseus, who killed Acrisius by accident. The expressive love between Danae and Zeus is imitated by the naked body of a woman and a golden shower on her body.

José Florencio Gelabert Pérez (Caibarien, 1904 - Havana, 1995) Cuban musician, sculptor, draftsman and teacher. He graduated from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in 1934. He received numerous awards, mentions and recognitions in Fine Arts Halls and Circles. His works are in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts. Florencio Gelabert is a renowned sculptor, who made more than twenty solo exhibitions beginning in 1929, several in the National Museum of Fine Arts, and participated in more than thirty collectives in Cuba, Spain and Brazil, the latter in the Sao Paulo Biennial. he traveled from Caibarién to Santa Clara in 1928 to audition to enter the famous San Alejandro Fine Arts School in Havana. He obtained one of the five vacancies. Already in the Cuban capital, he combined fine arts and music. When he graduated, he became a professor in San Alejandro and the academy’s principal in 1960.
With a calling common to wood sculptors –which began with his primary school carving carpentry classes and the active life of his home town’s shipyards, his chisels and gouges feverishly turned mahogany, “ácana” and ebony into female heads with black African features dating back to 1930.
In 1938 he used his savings to explore Europe: France (Paris, Marseilles), Italy (Naples, Rome, Florence, and Venice), Belgium (Malina). His encounter with the works by Aristide Maillol, Auguste Rodin, Ossip Zadkine, Constantin Brancusi and even with Wifredo Lam, who was also born in another Cuban coastal area, Sagua la Grande, and his encounter with the nude marble David sculpture...
