Head of Lust Bronze signed After A. Rodin

About the Item

Auguste Rodin (1840 – 1917) French Sculptor, born in Paris in 184, died in Meudon in 1917. "Head of Lust" (Tête de la Luxure), bronze. Signed A. Rodin near base on front side and inscribed with "Alexis Rudier Paris Fondeur" mark. Raised signature 'A. Rodin' inside base. 14 1/2"H. Very good condition with light wear to patina. signed A. Rodin on the front of the base. Stamped "ALEXIS RUDIER FONDEUR PARIS" (on the reverse). He is considered one of the prominent sculptors of the modern era. At the age of 14 he entered the Petite Ecole, a school of decorative arts in Paris. He applied three times to study at the renowned Ecole des Beaux-Arts but was rejected each time. In 1858 he began to do decorative stonework in order to make his living. Four years later the death of his sister Marie so traumatized Rodin that he entered a sacred order. The father superior of the order recognized Rodin's talents and encouraged him to pursue his art. In 1864 Rodin met a seamstress named Rose Beuret. She became his life companion and was the model for many of his works. That year Rodin submitted his Man with a Broken Nose to the Paris Salon. It was rejected but later accepted under the title Portrait of a Roman. Rodin traveled in 1875 to Italy, where the works of Michelangelo made a strong impression on him. The trip inspired his sculpture The Age of Bronze, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1877. It caused a scandal because the critics could not believe that Rodin had not used a casting of a live model in creating so realistic a work. The controversy brought Rodin more fame than praise might have. In 188 he was commissioned to create a bronze door for the future Museum of Decorative Arts. Although the work was unfinished at the time of his death, it provided the basis for some of Rodin's most influential and powerful work. In 1884 he was commissioned to create a monument that became The Burghers of Calais. His statues St. John the Baptist Preaching, Eve, The Age of Bronze, and The Thinker are world famous. Rodin died on Nov. 17, 1917, and was buried at Meudon. When Rodin was 76 years old he gave the French government the entire collection of his own works and other art objects he had acquired. They occupy the Hotel Biron in Paris as the Musee Rodin and are still placed as Rodin set them. He played a pivotal role in redefining sculpture in the late nineteenth century, both excelling at and transcending the academic Beaux-Arts tradition. His work redefined sculpture. Possessing an ability to organize a complex, turbulent, deeply pocketed surface, he set himself apart from the predominant figure sculpture tradition of the time. Rodin's most notable sculptures were roundly criticized during his lifetime. A pose might be considered too informal; the lack of a traditional theme found wanting; the exactness of his forms too real; or the "unfinishedness" of his surfaces disrespectful. Despite Rodin's misgivings with the staleness of academic classicism, he did not set out to rebel against tradition.

His works, especially his bronzes, are sold in major auctions mainly in France (Versailles, Drouot, Saint Germain En Laye, Enghien les Bains, etc. June 30, 1992, two bronzes were sold at Christie's in London) 2. They are exhibited in Parisian salons such as the Salon d'automne3, the Salon des artistes français, the Salon des Independants the exhibitions of the National Society of Fine Arts, the Salon de l'école française [ref. necessary]. He received the Arts-Sciences-Lettresn 1 Medal and is a member of the International Association of Visual Arts (affiliated with UNESCO). In addition, he produced a series of medals and sculptures for the Monnaie de Paris, and various achievements such as the bust of Dr. Coll Colomé, a monument erected in Benicarlo (Spain) and publishing covers including the novel by Jean-Marc Roberts Vincent's friend. The work of Jorge Borrás is a tribute to the woman [ref. necessary]. Her favorite themes are ballerinas and bathers as well as women in everyday attitudes. Wild animals, some endangered, are also very present in the work of Jorge Borrás, especially in recent years where he takes great pleasure in capturing the wild moment of his attitudes.
