About the Item

Dale Dunning’s eclectic and contemporary sculptural work explores universal themes. This wall sculpture is made from laser-cut brushed aluminum. The ‘head’ is mounted on a background of 0’s and 1’s. In the world of computer science and digital technology, 0’s and 1’s carry a significant meaning. They represent the binary numeral system, which is the foundation of all digital data storage and processing. In various philosophical traditions, binary oppositions are used to describe dualities in human experience, such as good vs. evil, light vs. dark, or order vs. chaos. Dunning’s choice of form—a faceless head is also a metaphor for humankind. One of a series. “The works are open-ended with no didactic intent other than to see new possibilities.” Dale Dunning Dunning holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. While earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Mt. Alison University, Dunning studied under Lawren P. Harris (son of Group of Seven member Lawren S. Harris) and George Tiessen. Dunning has exhibited across Canada and his work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the McIntosh Gallery at Western University, Carleton University Art Collection, and the National Library of Canada.
