About the Item

Johannes Nielsen (b.1979) was born in Falkenberg, Sweden. He is an artist who uses bronze sculpture to celebrate life and its beauty. He believes that sculptures of the human body can “reveal the inner spirit and emotions as well as its external physical appearance.” He uses the idea of the material and immaterial of human existence and portrays them in his works through a lively play with positive and negative space. The figures in his sculptures lack facial expression. However, the viewers are clearly able to feel the emotions that the artist is trying to convey. Something about the lack of material and expression allows the works to linger in people’s minds. Nielsen states that his sculptures are “a combination of traditional and contemporary esthetics and methods that express” his personal vision of reality. The artist uses his own body to 3D scan, which will be used as a base to sculpt a virtual model. The bronze and metal that he uses is casted once he has the mould. Working with metal requires a lot of attention as well as technical and mechanical troubleshooting. However it is also one of the few materials that can give the sense of organic quality, while being industrial and sturdy. Johannes Nielsen, in 2001 enrolled in the Lund’s Art School, and moved to Dublin in 2003 to become the assistant to sculptor Patrick O’Reilly, where he honed his sculptural practice. He has participated and showcased his works in several art fairs and exhibitions in Europe, US, and Asia. His works are now a part of public and private collections all over the globe. He is based in and continues his artistic practice with his wife, daughter, and son in Beijing, China. Other Sizes: Medium "30.5x10x8" Medium "18.5x6x4.5"

That Interim of Purpose
By Michael O'Keefe
Located in Dallas, TX
The sculpture is painted cast plaster. The dimensions are for the painted cast plaster. The black base dimensions are 2 x 10 x 10 inches. About this body of work: “Everybody has that feeling when they look at a work of art and it’s right, that sudden familiarity, a sort of...recognition, as though they were creating it themselves, as though it were being created through them while they look at it or listen to it...” ―William Gaddis, "The Recognitions" “A great deal of my recent work was made during a time when I was reading the great American novel by William Gaddis, "The Recognitions," the most demanding book I’ve ever read. Along the way, I extracted sentence fragments that interested me and I pieced them together to make the titles for the last three years of my work. So, my recent work is linked to Gaddis’ novel through the titles, but also in the theme of “recognition,” which speaks to the nature of my work. I feel my way through various processes until I recognize a possibility―a possibility that is promising in terms of visual dynamics but also in terms of giving a body to some part of my experience. It is my hope that the viewer is compelled to recognize some part of themselves reflected in the work.” —Michael O’Keefe Michael O’Keefe earned his MFA from SMU and currently teaches at The O’Keefe Studio Center in Richardson, Texas. This sculpture was included in "Recognitions," his fifth solo exhibition at Valley House...
