Antique French 19th Bronze Equestrian Group Horses Jockeys Statue Sculpture 1895

Circa 1895

About the Item

A fine late 19th century antique French bronze sculpture group, of a pair of race horses & jockeys, by Paul Louis Emile Loiseau-Rousseau, Paris (1861-1927). The bronze circa 1895 depicts two racehorses with their jockeys in mid jump over a naturalistically cast hedge, on a similarly cast base, the bronze is raised on a black & white veined marble moulded base. The bronze sculpture truly captures the energy of the horses & riders in full flight, possibly in a Steeplechase, it is signed to the base "E. Loiseau". The bronze has a deep rich dark brown patination, condition is excellent, the bronze weighs 40lbs. This very fine bronze sculpture is ready to grace your space. Loiseau-Rousseau was a student of the sculptor Théophile Barrau and at the turn of the century, he exhibited at the Paris salons, where he won a third-class medal in 1892 and a second-class medal three years later in 1895. He was awarded the gold medal at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris and was accepted as a Knight in the Legion of Honour in 1901. His busts, animal figures and statuettes, often with African themes where mainly Art Nouveau in style. Some of his works were later produced by Francois Rudier & Arthur Goldscheider, the founders of ’diteur d’art (art publishing house).
