About the Item

'Me and My Family' is an original opal serpentine sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Picket Mazhindu Bumhira. Family groupings like this are a beloved theme seen in the works of the Shona sculptors of Zimbabwe, which make a contemporary image while looking back to traditional compositional ideas from across the African continent. For example, sculptures like this look northward to the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria: the palace of the King of Ikere would often be decorated with sculptures featuring the queen, king, and their children in a hierarchy of scale to demonstrate their relationships to each other and to their subjects (compare with Art Institute of Chicago 1984.550). The figures in Picket's sculpture are likewise ambiguous and stylized, and are arranged using a similar hierarchy of scale with the matriarch towering over her children below. At the same time, the curving bodies and downcast eyes of the figures emphasizes familial trust and adoration. Thusly, sculptures like this present a vision of family structure and unity for people who, like many, find family indispensable. opal stone (serpentine) 49 x 14 x 8.5 inches 175 lbs signed "Picket Maz" on reverse along base Overall good condition; some scratches on the reverse. With a hole drilled in the base to accommodate a steel support rod. Picket Mazhindu Bumhira was born 1968 in the Seke communal lands near Harare, Zimbabwe. Picket had a passion for art from childhood and during his school days he loved drawing and painting. He was very inspired by sculpture of the late John Takawira, one of Zimbabwe's first generation of Shona sculptors, whom he met and worked with for a time when Picket went to Chapungu. Later he started to sculpt on his own and went on to teach his younger brother Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. Some of his works made the headlines in the newspapers, including "Spirit of Love," which was exhibited in Victoria Falls during Arts Gala. He has exhibited in the UK and in Germany and was among the sculptors who went to China for an exhibition at the Poverty Reduction Summit. Picket likes working on springstone and opal and especially enjoys making abstracts.

'Family' original signed Shona stone sculpture by Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira
By Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Family' is an original stone sculpture signed by Zimbabwean artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. The composition is an example of the family groupings, with each figure arranged as though they were a flower in a bouquet, that are so desired from Shona sculptors. Though the figures are ambiguous and stylized, the figures are arranged using a hierarchy of scale: the matriarch (perhaps a grandmother) towers over the other members of her family, with her children and grandchildren below. Thusly, sculptures like this present a vision of family structure and unity. opal stone (serpentine) 36 x 13.5 x 11 inches signed 'W. Maz' along base Overall good condition. 'Mother and Child' original stone Shona sculpture by Obert Mukumbi sitting
By Obert Mukumbi
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Mother and Child' is an original stone sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Obert Mukumbi. This sculpture is unlike most other examples of Shona sculpture in that it has been carved to sit on a step, ledge or shelf rather than to stand upright. While this difference offers the chance for a more interactive artwork that can be set in unexpected locations, the aesthetics sensibilities that Obert applies to the subject are steeped in the Shona tradition. The materiality of the stone is on full display, with the artist playing with textures of rough-hewn stone and smooth polish. In addition, the mother and child show an intimate relationship, a common and desired theme amongst Shona artists. springstone not signed 25 x 10 x 11 inches, overall body stands 16 inches tall from seat legs extend 9.25 inches downward from seat concrete base included at request of buyer 95 lbs Overall excellent condition with no signs of wear or damage. Obert Mukumbi was born on February 11, 1974 in the village of Dengu in Bindura, some 86 kilometers north east of Harare, Zimbabwe, where he likewise completed his O-levels in school. During his education, he was interested in wood craft. By age twelve, however, he began working in stone under the guidance and encouragement of his brother Kennedy Musekiwa...
