About the Item

Tony Berlant (b. 1941) is an American artist renowned for his painterly collages and intricate metal sculptures. His work combines various source materials including photographs, found objects, fragment of metal packaging and signage as well as other elements to create rich and textured assemblages. Since the 1960s, Berlant has refined his distinctive collage technique, which transforms eclectic materials into dazzling and meticulously crafted compositions. The artist cuts his materials into small pieces with great precision and secures each component to a flat surface with steel brads, adding a distinct industrial quality or even folk art flair to each work. In the 1970s, Berlant expanded beyond the two-dimensional plane, creating sculptural forms, such as boxes and houses constructed from repurposed and manufactured tin. This piece is a paradigm of Berlant's practice. A symmetrical house-shaped structure is adorned with ethereal collage elements that follow a distinctly cool palette of sky blue, periwinkle, and rose quartz. The right corner of the work is consumed by a cartoon-like portrait, a signature motif for the artist who often uses faces to evoke a sense of narrative within his compositions. Like the best of his work, the playfulness of the subject matter is juxtaposed with the raw, industrial functionality of the steel nails that hold it together. The result presents a striking tension between wonder and practicality. Berlant's work is celebrated in several prestigious museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) is one of our favorite sculptors and an important contributor to public art in Toronto. In addition to the numerous public sculptures in Toronto by Eloul, his works can be found in many other prominent open spaces around the world, from California to Israel. Most familiar with Eloul associate his work with his signature forms; large brushed aluminum (or steel) angled rectangles. However his earlier work was realized in stone. This fine sculpture, a form that is revisited and eventually created in metal, is made of Jerusalem Stone...
