About the Item

Seifert, Victor Heinrich. 1870 Vienna - 1953 Berlin "Young Athlete with Slingshot" "David" Large bronze, dark patinated, signed: Prof. V.H. Seifert Height: 71.5 cm, approx. 85 cm high Victor Heinrich Seifert (1870 Vienna - 1953 Berlin) was a prominent German sculptor. Born in Döbling (near Vienna), Austria, in 1870, Seifert received his artistic training at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Vienna and later at the Berlin Kunstakademie, where he studied under notable sculptors such as Ernst Herter, Ludwig Manzel, and Peter Breuer. Seifert was a prolific artist, particularly after World War I, when he became one of the most active sculptors creating war memorials for German towns and cities. He is also well-known for his genre figures, often depicting female nudes, dancers, and allegorical figures, many of which were cast in bronze. His works include fountain figures, statues, and monuments, such as the Bismarck Monument in Sebnitz and the Hindenburg Monument in Bad Reinerz. He undertook study trips to Paris (1903), Italy (1905), and Brussels and London (1910). Seifert was a member of the Künstler-Genossenschaft (Artists' Cooperative) and the Künstlerverein der Bildhauer (Artists' Association of Sculptors). He also exhibited his work at the Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung (Great German Art Exhibition) during the Nazi era. He eventually attained the title of Professor, although a teaching position is not explicitly recorded. This famous work is one of his most successful subjects, a simply wonderful work of art in bronze—the figure of this young man (David) is graceful and dignified. He is free of defiance or brazenness, possessing a natural and chaste demeanor. His reserved posture and soft, flowing lines testify to his inner strength and self-confidence. The patina is warm and fluid, similar to the figure's form, shifting from a heavy, dark bronze tone to a muted dark tone for an intensely impressive overall effect. Victor Heinrich Seifert died in Berlin in 1953. His works are frequently found at auction houses. "Male Athlete with Kettlebell", Rare Bronze Sculpture with Male Nude by Seifert
By Franz Seifert
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. Although Seifert is known for his nude figures straining to accomplish physical tasks -- such as carrying a large bucket or splitting a stone -- this sculpture is the only example known to exist. A decade after this sculpture was cast, Seifert carved a marble portrait of Siegfried Marcus, inventor of the gasoline-powered car, for a monument in Vienna, which includes a nude male figure in bas relief racing forward on the upper edge of an automobile wheel. He also created a large sculpture grouping honoring Empress Elizabeth...
