A 2023 recipient of the Vermont Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts,
Leslie Fry is represented in this show with fantastical sculptures of female hands, titled the “Cuffed” series. Tensely poised and mannered gestures, inspired by Parmigianino and Caravaggio, cascade into blooms and barnacles, creating a mesmerizing visual dissonance. This elision of romance and rigidity both draws attention to the limitations of the female form and liberates it from the constraints of reality. Leslie Fry’s works have been exhibited internationally at such venues as Kunsthaus in Hamburg, Zwitscher Machine Gallery in Berlin, Hangaram Art Museum in Seoul, Windspiel Galerie in Vienna, Couvent des Cordeliers in Paris, Artists Space and Wave Hill in New York, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum near Boston, and Centre des Arts Visuels in Montreal. Her public sculptures have been commissioned in New York, South Korea, Montreal, Florida, Wisconsin, and Vermont; public collections include Tufts University, Songchu International Sculpture Park, Freehand New York, Kohler Arts Center, Tampa Museum of Art, Fleming Museum of Art, Musée d’art de Joliette, and St. Petersburg, Florida’s Museum of Fine Arts. Fry’s M.F.A. is from Bard College, and her B.A. is from the University of Vermont, with a Foundation year at the Central School of Art in London. She currently lives and works in Winooski, VT.

Biography
Gaston Broquet (1880-1947) is a French sculptor. He spent his childhood in Void where his parents hold a butchery. In 1901, he received the competition of the School of Decorative Arts of Paris in the modeling section. In Paris, he studied with sculptors Jean-Antoine Injalbert and Gabriel-Jules Thomas. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français in 1912 and obtained a medal and a travel grant. He is also awarded by the Society of French Artists at the Salon of 1920 a silver medal in the section Sculpture and etching in medals and gemstones. During the First World War, he was a soldier and then stretcher on the front and wounded in 1915. In this trench experience, he will find inspiration for his war memorials that made him famous. CHARLES CARY RUMSEY, born in Buffalo, NY in 1879. His interest in sculpture appeared and was encouraged at an early age. The most significant encouragement came when the boy was taken by his parents to Paris in 1893.
After graduating from Harvard in 1902, Rumsey returned to Paris where he took a studio in the Latin Quarter and enrolled and the Julian and Colarossi Academies. One professor, Emmanuel Fremiet, a specialist in equestrian statuary, devoted special emphasis to the study of the horse, and his training was to have a decisive influence on the young Rumsey. Apart from sculpture, horses were the great passion of his life. He was an excellent horseman and an 8 goal polo player with Meadowbrook Polo Club Long Island NY.
Rumsey’s specialties included equestrian sculptures – portraits of polo players and prize horses, as well as of cowboys, cattle and horses as metaphors. He worked principally in bronze and stone, often employing mythology and historical themes articulated in private commissions for freestanding statuary and in public monuments. His 40-foot bas relief panels of Indians, horses and buffalos for the Manhattan Bridge and the heroic subject matter of Rice Stadium commission are examples.
