Abstract Art

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Patricia Fabricant, 050320, 2020, Gouache On Panel, 14 x 11 inches, Geometry
Located in Darien, CT
Patricia Fabricant is a painter curator, and award-winning book designer, born in New York City. She received her BA from Wesleyan University and studied painting in Florence Italy. Her abstract and figurative paintings have been exhibited widely at such galleries as ODETTA, M David & Co, Front Room, SFA Projects, Equity Gallery, Morgan Lehman, the Painting Center, and 490 Atlantic. Her curatorial practice includes three editions of the benefit group show, Among Friends, Studio Mates at Front Room Gallery, and With the Grain, at Equity Gallery. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Patricia Fabricant has a deep and abiding interest in process-driven work, from mandalas and yantras to Aboriginal song-line paintings, Islamic tiles, and the Pattern and Decoration movement. The Pattern & Decoration movement interests her in particular since it was a female-driven movement using the materials and techniques of traditional “women’s work” at a time when the art world was dominated by the machismo of minimalism. Fabricant also draws inspiration from spiritualists such as Emma Kunz, Hilma af Klint, Agnes Pelton, early...

Her saturated surfaces are luminous, with alternate glossy and matte layers, but also bear rough nail marks that scar and deconstruct the work. Da Capo
Located in Fresno, CA
“I’ll find me a place by the river now and give up all my story lines.” – Van Morrison All of these paintings originated in the past year, but I suspect they truly began in 1955 after I returned from the army to complete my college education at Fresno State. Having discovered the heroic-scaled canvases of the abstract impressionists while away, I changed my major to art. Soon, after enrolling into a painting class taught by Darwin Musselman, I felt I’d be advancing from the old school to the new wave. Wrong. Musselman, an intense taskmaster, held me firm to the basics and taught me how to crawl first. The flying would come after I paid my dues. Musselman had studied at the Los Angeles Art Center and The School of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Proficient in many styles of painting, he never shied away from demonstrating techniques he felt might spur a student’s progress. About the time I began to suspect he was controlling us all too tightly, he showed the class Hans Namath...

Finding My Way 3 , Oil on Panel, 30 x 30, Abstract, "THREE I's", Texas Artist
Located in Houston, TX
Finding My Way 3 Cheryl D. McClure oil on wood panel 30 x 30 x 2 Inv #: 821 Price $3,300 To make my paintings I have come to the realization that I use what I call the ‘Three I’s” of INFLUENCES, INTUITION. and INTENT. Like a lot of artists, McClure’s interest in art developed early in childhood. She recalls, “When I was eight years old, I begged my dad to let me take an after-school painting class. I was shocked when I got there and found out they were painting with paint by number kits. I did not want to do that. I hate coloring inside the lines. So, the teacher allowed me to look for images to use as inspiration. In my memory, I think the first one must have been a reproduction of a Cezanne landscape. I just did what I did all on my own, but I loved mixing colors. Then my dad died, and we moved from Oklahoma to Texas. Sadly, I never really did anything else until I was in my twenties. I then took up painting again all on my own and trying to learn from other artists demonstrating their painting techniques and taking workshops. I have been painting ever since, more than forty years.” She continues, “For many years I only painted with acrylics or mixed media collage. In 2005, I also started painting with encaustic and have gone back to using oil paint again. I suppose acrylic remains my dominant medium. Mixing it up now and then keeps me on my toes and is a great way to learn. Each medium can teach you certain aspects of painting others do not. Each medium has its strengths and weaknesses depending on what you want to express. You can learn from all. I did not love watercolor because it took too much pre-planning. But I learned a lot about negative shapes and composition. I learned a lot with pastel and charcoal about making marks. By working back and forth with different media, I am growing as a painter.” If I used only intent, I would more than likely be disappointed because my imagined intent is always elusive. I get more than I imagined by not setting too many rules about how to get there. Using all of these factors, I can use the knowledge of formal issues that comes from viewing a lot of art and, also, from being in the studio making art all of the time. Using that comprehension of formal design as an aid to intuitively know what is the right relationship of color, mark, space, etc. is the intent. Intention is necessary to direct you to explore the former two. Intention also demands you delve more into your own reasons for making art. 2020 University of Texas, College of Pharmacy Partnership Exhibit, Tyler, TX Beauty of Art and Medicine IV, Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Building, Tyler Junior College, Tyler, TX Stable, Cerulean Gallery, Dallas, TX 2019 Mississippi Art Colony Fall Travel Show, juror, Stanley Kurth Small Works, Gallery Mack, Seattle, WA 2017 Black Tie (optional), Invitational, Adam Peck Gallery, Provincetown, Mass. No. 8
Located in Nashville, TN
This stunning abstract by contemporary artist, architect, and designer Ana Carolina Mönnaco blends a beautiful variety of colors that make the piece jump off the canvas. This piece was made for the artist's exhibit, "Blurred & Fractured," at Modfellows Art Gallery - WeHo in Nashville, Tennessee. The piece is hand signed by the artist in the bottom-right corner and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the gallery. Mönnaco’s history in architecture has pushed her to peer past the structured world in which we live, to convey the unbound world which surrounds us. She is interested in the continuous reaching of life. She says, “we live with this blurred and fractured vision of the world, yet inside each of us there’s an undeniable conviction that something beautiful and perfect still exists beyond our grasp.” In response to this, Mönnaco uses a sophisticated color palette and inspiration found in the beauty of the natural world to create rich environments which encapsulate the viewer by surrounding them with wonderment of the unknown. About the Artist: Ana Carolina Mönnaco is an artist from Curitiba, Brazil, where she developed a love of art and architecture. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After graduating in 2002, she joined Morris Architects in Orlando, Florida. Mönnaco has won many prestigious awards including the International Watercolor Masters Merit Award, the AIP 24 Juror Award, and the AIP Hugh Ferris...
