MODERN STYLE

The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.

Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.

The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.

Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

Modernist Abstract Expressionist Watercolor Painting Bauhaus Weimar Pawel Kontny
Located in Surfside, FL
Abstract watercolor composition bearing the influence of the earlier color-block compositions of Paul Klee. Pawel August Kontny, (Polish-German-American artist) He was born in Laurahuette, Poland, in 1923, the son of a wealthy pastry shop owner. In 1939 he began studying architecture in Breslau where he was introduced to the European masters and to the work of some of the German Expressionists, soon afterward banned as "degenerate artists" and removed from museums throughout Germany by the Nazi regime. His studies were interrupted by World War II. Drafted into the German army, traveling in many countries as a soldier, he sketched various landscapes but in 1945, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Italy. After the war, he studied at the Union of Nuremberg Architects to help design buildings to replace ones destroyed in the war. He recorded his impressions of the local population and the landscapes through his watercolors and drawings. Pawel Kontny thereafter moved to Nuremberg, Germany, becoming a member of the Union of Nuremberg Architects and helping to rebuild the city's historic center. He soon decided to concentrate on his professional art career. He married Irmgard Laurer, a dancer with the Nuremberg Opera. Pavel Kontny 's career as an artist was launched with his participation in an all German exhibition, held at the Dusseldorf Museum in 1952. He held one-man shows in Germany, Switzerland and the United States. During his trip to the United States in 1960, Kontny became instantly enamored with Colorado, and decided to relocate to Cherry Hills with his wife and two children. He quickly established himself in the local art community, being affiliated for a time with Denver Art Galleries and Saks Galleries. His subject matter became the Southwest. During this time he received the Prestigious Gold Medal of the Art Academy of Rome. His extensive travel provided material for the paintings he did using his hallmark marble dust technique. he also worked equally in pastel, watercolor, charcoal and pencil-and-ink. in a style which merged abstraction and realist styles, influenced by Abstract Expressionist painting and South Western American landscapes. In the early 1960s he was one of only a few European-born professional artists in the state, a select group that included Herbert Bayer (1900-1985), a member of the prewar Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, Germany, and Roland Detre (1903-2001), a Hungarian modernist painter. As a Denver, Colorado resident, Pavel Kontny exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States, Germany and Japan. There, he was inspired by frequent trips to Native American pueblos in the Southwest, as well as by the study of the Plains Indians of Montana and Wyoming. Over the years Kontny had a number of students and generously helped young artist by hosting exhibitions at his Cherry Hills home. For many years he generously donated his paintings to support charitable causes in Denver. Influences during his European years included German pastelist C.O. Muller, German Informel painter Karl Dahmen and Swiss artist, Hans Erni. In the early 1950s his painting style showed the influence of the Die Brücke (The Bridge), a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905 who had a major impact on the evolution of modern art in the twentieth century in Germany. By the middle of the decade his style incorporated more referential abstraction and total abstraction, resulting in part from his study of Hans Hartung, a German artist based in Paris who exhibited his gestural abstract work in Germany. The American moon landing in 1969 inspired Paul Kontny...

Southern California Landscape
Located in Soquel, CA
Clean and modern landscape by Kipp Stewart (American, b. 1928). This piece is executed in a bold, blocky style. Large bushy trees cast shadows on lush grass surrounding a man-made pond. Behind the pond is other vegetation, as well as white houses with boldly colored roofs. The reflections in the pond are particularly captivating, completed with Stewart's signature attention to detail. Signed in the lower right "Stewart" Presented in a wood frame with a linen fillet. Canvas size: 24"H x 36"W Kipp Stewart (American, b. 1928) is an artist, architect, and designer from Pennsylvania. Known to furniture obsessives for the Declaration series he codesigned for North Carolina’s Drexel Furniture, Stewart is most commonly associated with mid-century design movements of his adopted home state of California. There, in 1972, Stewart designed the Ventana Big Sur, a luxury resort near Montecito for which he oversaw architecture, planning, furniture and interior design across 160 acres of land. By the time Stewart spearheaded the Ventana, he was already well versed in furniture design. After briefly serving in the U.S. Navy as a teenager, Stewart enrolled at the Chouinard Art Institute (present-day CalArts) in Los Angeles. By the time he graduated, he was steeped in the world of modern seating design, experimenting with new chair models that bridged form and function. Charles and Ray Eames were important influences on his early work, which included a chrome-framed lounge chair whose reclined shape bears a striking resemblance to the Eameses’ iconic lounge. In the late 1950s, Stewart partnered with another West Coast furniture designer, Stewart MacDougall, on a line of modern furniture for Drexel. (The pair were also producing case pieces and more for Glenn of California.) Drexel soon unveiled Stewart and McDougall’s Declaration line, which was constructed entirely of natural walnut and featured the choice of white porcelain or brass drawer pulls and cabinet door handles...

French Modernist Mourlot Lithograph Vintage Air France Poster Roger Bezombes
Located in Surfside, FL
Vintage French Travel Poster, Air France Roger Bezombes (1913-1994) French Bezombes was a painter, sculptor, medalist, and designer. He studied in Paris, at the École des Beaux-Arts, and was much influenced by his friendship with Maurice Denis. Heavily influenced by surrealism, He worked principally as a painter, adopting the saturated Fauvist colors of Henri Matisse in landscapes and figure studies often based on observation of “exotic” cultures, notably Mediterranean and North African. Constrained, because a very young orphan, to all kinds of professions which provide him with the material means to devote himself to painting - he participated in 1930 in the installation of the exhibition of the Bauhaus at the Grand Palais-, Roger Bezombes is student of the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. (Ecole des Beaux Artes) He was trained in the art of fresco by Paul Baudoüin, René Barotte nonetheless restores that the young man's preference goes to the practice of "truancy" which he uses to make copies at the Louvre Museum. It’s the time when Paul Gauguin’s paintings, Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse are revealed to him by Maurice Denis with whom he will remain close until his accidental death, painting him on his funeral bed on November 14, 1943. He executed surrealist tapestry designs for Aubusson and Gobelin tapestries, posters (winning the Grand Prix de l'Affiche Francaise in 1984), costumes and sets for ballets at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, reliefs and murals. In 1965 he took up medal-making, expressing in his numerous metallic works for the Paris Mint that obsession with found objects which is also evident in his large-scale sculpture and in his posters. He designed posters for Air France and for the French national railways. Roger Bezombes went to Africa for the first time in 1936 thanks to a travel grant and received the same year the second grand prize of Rome . In 1937 he traveled around Morocco where he became friends with Albert Camus. The year 1938 offered him both his first solo exhibition at the Charpentier gallery in Paris with paintings and gouaches on the theme of Morocco and the attribution of the national grand prize for the arts, earning him a great journey which , from Dakar to Algiers , takes it through Chad , Tamanrasset and Hoggar. Roger Bezombes became a professor at the Julian Academy in 1950. For him, 1951 was the year of a trip to Greece and the year where he began his relationship with tapestry work. Roger Bezombes visited Israel in 1953, Tunisia and Egypt in 1954. He was appointed official painter of the Navy in 1955. Pierre Mazars analyzes that “after a period where we notice the influence of Van Gogh and GeorgesBraque, particularly in his landscapes of Provence, he came to a more schematic writing, the colored spots and the thicknesses of material taking more of importance as the subject. He even performed composite works, half-watercolors, half-pasted papers, in which he incorporated pieces of newspapers”. He was elected titular to the Academy of Overseas Sciences in 1978. "The range of Bezombes' talent forms is remarkable,” writes Lynne Thornton, “ranging from paintings, murals, travel posters, tapestry cartons, book illustrations, monumental ceramic decorations, ballet and theater sets, totem sculptures, sculpture objects, jewelry and medallions”. He was part of the mid century mod School of Paris that included Leon Zack, Bernard Lorjou, Paul Augustin Aizpiri, Gabriel Godard, Michel Henry, Hans Erni, Bengt Lindstrom, Alfred Manessier, Andre Hambourg, Raymond Legueult and Jean Rigaud. Select Solo Exhibitions: 1938: Galerie Charpentier, Paris 1950, '53, '55, '57: Galerie Andre Weil, Paris 1953:Wildenstein Gallery, London 1954: Institut Francais, Cologne 1956: Galerie Matarasso, Nice 1957: Horn Gallery, Luxembourg; Guilde de la Gravure, Paris 1958: Denys-Puech Museum, Rodez 1962: Musee de l'Athenee, Geneva; Chateau Grimaldi, Cagnes-sur-Mer 1966: Galerie des Ponchettes, Nice 1967: Galerie Martel, Montreal 1968: Romanet-Vercel Gallery, New York; Reattu Museum, Arles; Le Corbusier Center, Firminy 1969: Galerie Philippe...

Original "Children's Year" vintage poster. The health of the child is the power
Located in Spokane, WA
Original "Children's Year" Health of the Child is Power of the Nation vintage poster. Archival linen backed original 1919 horizontal. Lathrop, the Children's Bureau's first director, soon commissioned several studies to investigate the causes and conditions of infant mortality. She wanted hard data to dispel the notions that child death was inevitable or an act of God, and to prove that infant mortality was not about genetics but rather environment. Lathrop's research showed that children often died from infections and conditions that could be prevented. To spread the facts, the Bureau published a series of advice pamphlets on infant care. Children's Bureau under Lathrop created a powerful, lasting legacy in the U.S. — the idea that every child has a right to a childhood. "That every kid has a right to dependency," she says. "That they don't have to support themselves, and that the government is the parent of last resort if everything else fails." Rare horizontal poster...

Challenging accepted modes of painting, Abstract Expressionists produced highly experimental works that jolted the public out of its postwar complacency. Italian Artist Modern Silkscreen Eugenio Carmi
Located in Surfside, FL
Eugenio Carmi is an Italian painter born in 1920 in Genoa. He studied in Turin in Felice Casorati’s studio. His experience as a graphic designer in the ‘50s, is decisive for his pictorial research, based on a rigorous geometrical structure and on a fine analysis of the perception of colors. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1966. In 1967 he showed some electronic works in the Superlund exhibition organized by Pierre Restany in Lund, Sweden. In 1968, he introduced the “Carm-o-matic”, during the Cybernetic Serendipity show at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. In 1973, he produced an entirely abstract 25-minute show for RAI’s Experimental Programs Service. The same year, he taught visual art seminars at the Rhode Island Institute of Design in the United States. In the ‘70s, he gave courses at the Accademia of Macerata and at the Accademia of Ravenna (Italy). He produced illustrations for three of Umberto Eco’s stories, published in Italy by Bompiani and in many other countries. The French Ministry of Education has selected them for libraries and schools in France. The most important retrospective of his work was organized by the Milan town hall in 1990, followed by a prestigious exhibition in Budapest, in the halls of the Royal Palace, in 1992. In 1991 he exhibited at the San Francisco Italian American Museum. In 1996 the “Carmi” book is published by Umberto Eco and Duncan Macmillan and presented at the Milan Triennial: a synthesis of his life. From 1957 to 1965 he will play the role of artistic director of Cornigliano's corporate magazine. During this time iron and steel are materials that Carmi meets every day and become a strong creative stimulus for him. In his first solo exhibition - presented by Gillo Dorfles in 1958 at the Galleria Numero di Firenze - the protagonists are the enamels on steel and since 1960 he made various iron and steel works welded and lithographed milk. Iron and steel is the work that in 1962 presented at Spoleto Sculpture exhibition in the city , organized by Giovanni Carandente under the V Festival of the Two Worlds . In this period, he is involved not only in the cultural politics of the Istallier ( Victor Vasarely , Umberto Eco , Max Bill , Konrad Wachsmann , Furio Colombo , Ugo Mulas , Kurt Blum , Emanuele Luzzati , Flavio Costantini ) , But also in the cultural activity of the Warehouse Gallery , which Carmi founded in Boccadasse in 1963. The Warehouse Gallery with multiples intends to propose a serial art accessible to a wider audience and is placed in international discussions on 'Multiplied Art, representing one of the most important examples. The friendship and mutual esteem that binds him to Umberto Eco has two very important fruits at this time: Children's Fables and Stripsody . In 1966 for the publishing house Bompiani came three Eco fables illustrated by Carmi and then re-introduced in 1988 with new Carmi illustrations and a fable more. Stripsody is a musical project on cartoon sound, designed and then interpreted by the genius singer Cathy Berberian, with Eco texts and illustrations by Carmi. Eugenio Carmi, who is always fascinated by the new technological possibilities in the 1960s and 1970s, is the author of experimental cinematic and audiovisual artwork and also realizes those who will call electrical imagery signals that will also be at the center of a provocative installation on the streets of the city of Caorle . It is at this stage that in 1966 he was at the XXXIII edition of the Venice Biennale with the electronic work SPCE (electronically controlled polycyclic structure), which is also the invitation of Pierre Restany to participate with electronic works at the SuperLund exhibition in Sweden. In 1971, he moved to Milan with his family, where he established his study. At this point, though with incursions in other parallel fields such as the realization of mirrors and stained glass, painting, and sporadically sculpture - which had approached the Istal period - is at the center of its activity. It is at the beginning of the seventies that it deepens the geometric language, already open with some previous experiences (accident prevention signs for the Italsider, some multiples for the Deposit and electrical imagery signals), replacing it with the informal one. In 1979 he produced a magazine - which will remain the same number - by the name of Res Publica , for which he receives the contributions of intellectuals and artists, including Umberto Eco, Antonio Porta , Gillo Dorfles , Richard Paul Lohse...

Shortly after he finished school, Opper worked briefly as a decorator’s assistant and then started his career as a commercial artist, working for several firms such as Fibreboard, Beatrix Food and Precision. Working full-time and dedicating himself to having a rich family life occupied most of Opper's time, but he continued to be creative.
