Cindy Bernard’s career spans nearly three decades and she is best known for photographs and projections that explore the relationship between cinema, memory, and landscape including the widely exhibited series Ask the Dust (1988-92), now in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (21 part set), the Pompidou, MOMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She is a recipient of grants and fellowships from the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts, California Arts Council, Creative Capital, Anonymous Was a Woman, the Harpo Foundation, California Community Foundation, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the MacDowell Colony. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Japan, and was included in the Whitney and Lyon Biennials. In addition to her visual practice, Bernard takes an active interest in the spaces and production of social exchange. She was a director and advisor to Foundation for Art Resources from 1985 to 1990, a founding director of the Coalition for Freedom of Expression, and co-founder of MOCA Mobilization. Bernard is also the founder and director of The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS), an organization she began in response to the need for a flexible and sustainable association dedicated to experimental music in Los Angeles. She has curated and produced more than 50 concerts for SASSAS including Welcome Inn Time Machine for Pacific Standard Time in 2012. Her interest in sound has spurred several projects including a series of photographs of municipal band shells which Bernard sees as an architecture of public exchange and The Inquisitive Musician, an adaptation of a 17th century German satire, Musicus Curiosus, or Battalus, the Inquisitive Musician; the Struggle for Precedence between the Kunst Pfeifer and the Common Players. The Inquisitive Musician pits itinerant “beer fiddlers” against the city sanctioned “Kunstpfeifer” in an argument over who has the right to perform and be compensated. Presented as a staged reading incorporating video and live music, The Inquisitive Musician has been performed in New York, in Los Angeles at the LA County Museum of Art, and most recently at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in June 2013. Current projects include Vinland, a meditation on the complex and continually shifting relationships between spaces, social and economic structures, and personal and collective histories and, more recently, an “episodic” series based on the history of social nudism: Your Personal View of (Social) Nudism. Bernard is a Adjunct Professor of Graduate Fine Art at Art Center College of Art and Design and was appointed the inaugural Ruffin Distinguished Artist-In-Residence at the University of Virginia for the academic year 2013/2014. She was a 2016 National Endowment for the Arts Fellow at the MacDowell Colony and will be in residence at the UCross Foundation in 2017. Muse X Editions. Dimensions: Image area measures 8.25"h x 6.25"w., Frame measures 17.5 x 14.5 Mark Citret was born in 1949 in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in San Francisco. He began photographing seriously in 1968 and received both his BA and MA in Art from San Francisco State University. He has worked on many photographic projects over the course of his career and continues to do so. From 1973 to 1975 he lived in and photographed Halcott Center, a farming valley in New York's Catskill Mountains. In the mid to late 1980s, he produced a large body of work with the working title of "Unnatural Wonders", which is his personal survey of architecture in the national parks. He spent four years, 1990 to 1993, photographing "Coastside Plant", a massive construction site in the southwest corner of San Francisco. Since he moved to his current home in 1986, he has been photographing the ever-changing play of ocean and sky from the cliff behind his house. Currently, he is in the midst of a multi-year commission from the University of California San Francisco, photographing the construction of their 43 acre Mission Bay life-sciences campus. "Entering the Bus" Expressionist Figurative Composition Original Oil on Canvas Dynamic figurative composition by Bay area Figural, Abstract expressionist and notable Burning Man artist Jakob Bokulich (American, b. 1974). Several figures are crowded together, some of which are nude. Others are wearing typical clothing, and appear to be going out their daily lives. The expressive, slightly distorted faces and close placement of the figures is reminiscent of some of Francisco Goya's paintings. Titled, dated, and signed on verso: "Entering the Bus" May, 1992 Jake Bokulich No frame, but the artist has affixed black tape to the edges. Jakob Bokulich (1974, Santa Cruz, CA) is a self-trained, multi-disciplinary artist known for his paintings and kinetic sculptures. His work is in the collection of the Croatian Embassy in Paris, and he was awarded an Honorarium grant in 2018 by Burning Man for his 21 foot-tall sculpture "Big Pollinator," which was years in the making and involved the work of over 100 volunteers. The son of an auto mechanic, Bokulich began painting at age 12 after a house fire left his family homeless and he stayed temporarily with a local landscape painter. At 17 he left home for Europe - his art education was living in art squats and artist communities, and immersing himself in the museums and galleries of Europe. Drawing inspiration from living in a war zone in Croatia between 1993-1995, he exhibited in galleries in Paris, Saint-Tropez, Chamonix, and Split, Croatia. Transitioning back to the U.S, the artist helped build artist communities in San Francisco and Oakland, being deeply involved in spaces such as Cellspace, The Artship, and The Creamery. In this phase of his practice, Bokulich explored performance and ritual, co-writing and performing in the film Hysteria by Antero Alli. This prompted his stay in LA working in film and set design. In 2015 the seasoned and well rounded artist moved to New York City to return to a studio practice, now informed by his experiences in ritual, meditation, and unconventional self exploration. Bokulich’s work reinforces modes of seeing in a world where the senses have become neglected.
