Adaa Art Dealers Association Of America Photography

Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA)
Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA)
Founded in 1962, the Art Dealers Association of America is a vetted community of more than 180 top-tier galleries across the United States. Working with these member galleries, ADAA appraisers offer assessment services for artworks spanning from the Renaissance to the present day. The ADAA also arranges public forums on important art-related topics and hosts The Art Show, presented each year at New York’s Park Avenue Armory, which stands out among art fairs for its acclaimed selection of curated booths — many of which are one-artist exhibitions.

West 28th Street (from the series A Story of the New York Subway)
By Kazuo Sumida
Located in New York, NY
14 x 11 inch gelatin silver print. Edition 15. Signed on verso. Kazuo Sumida first visited New York in 1995. He found the city to be one of “both bustle and silence,” particularly the underground world of the subway, where he encountered “a place full of characters.” By 2002, he had produced a large body of work of images taken in this subterranean metropolis – tender scenes of lovers and children; gritty portraits of beggars for whom the subway is home; artists, musicians, commuters, and others who pass through the tunnels on their daily journeys. The resulting monograph, A Story of the New York Subway, was published in 2002, and this image appeared on the cover. Sumida was born in 1952 in Kochi Prefecture in southern Japan. Although photography was not his formal career, Sumida has pursued the art throughout his life. He graduated from Osaka Photography Graduate School in 1983, and also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, on a fellowship from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He lives in Japan, and continues to visit New York frequently. His work has been shown at the Tokyo Ginza Kodak Photo...

By Karen Knorr

Also available for local pick up at our New York City gallery. The Way of Ishq (2019) by Karen Knorr. Archival pigment print Image size: 48 x 60 inches Frame Size: 52 x 64 inches framed Edition 2 of 5 Signed, with certificate of authenticity Artist Biography - While Knorr’s images take some of their inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals in literature and art, there is another almost subconscious strain to her work. Going back to the time of cave painting we see that these early visual artists not only recorded their lives and surroundings, but used art to express themselves. The depiction of animals in symbolic and powerful ways and the urge to create these images with the best tools at hand is a line stretching from these unnamed cave painters to Karen Knorr. Playfully combining technologies and genres, Knorr mixes digital...

Untitled from The RFK Funeral Train
By Paul Fusco
Located in New York, NY
Listing includes free shipping for unframed prints to the continental U.S. and a 14-day return policy. Paul Fusco RFK Funeral Train Portfolio, 1968/2008 24 x 16 inch fujiflex print Edition 3 of 10 Signed and editioned on separate certificate Biography - In the middle of 1968, two events shook the nation - the assassination of Martin Luther King on April 4th and the assassination of Robert Kennedy on June 5th. Hastily arranged, Robert Kennedy’s funeral train took place on June 8th – a swelteringly hot early summer day. Paul Fusco, then a staff for LOOK Magazine, was given a place with other journalists on the train. As the train made its progress down the eastern seaboard, hundreds of thousands of mourners came out to line the railway tracks and pay their final respects to Bobby Kennedy and all he stood for. From inside the train, Fusco began to take pictures of the mourners – people from every section of society – black, white, rich, poor, in large groups and on their own. For the eight hours it took for the train to make the usually four-hour journey Fusco never put down his camera except to reload film shooting approximately 2,000 pictures. The resulting images are one of the most powerful and affecting series of photographs ever taken. Shot on Kodachrome film – a film with a particularly vibrant palette favored at the time by photojournalists – Fusco's pictures blend the spontaneous look of snapshots with artistic precision of the decisive moment. If there was ever an example of a photographer being “in the zone” Fusco’s beautifully composed frames are like Zen arrows each hitting their target. Each photograph carries its own weight and tells its own story, but cumulatively the series is an epic vision of America. Because LOOK Magazine's bi-weekly schedule caused it to come out a week after its rival LIFE, the magazine chose to print a retrospective album of pictures of RFK rather than pictures of the funeral, and so Fusco's RFK Funeral Train photographs...

Prints are on active consignment from the estate of Antonio Lopez. Purchase includes certificates of authenticity from the estate of Antonio Lopez. These Kodak prints are not signed by Antonio Lopez. Artist Biography - The foremost fashion illustrator of the 1970s and 80s, Antonio (as he signed his work) was and remains one of the most highly regarded and influential figures in the fashion world. While not initially known as a photographer, Antonio was rarely without his favorite Instamatic camera, and as his career progressed he turned increasingly to photography to create fashion stories, portraits, and elaborate mise-en-scènes. A serial Svengali, as the writer Karin Nelson noted: “Lopez brilliantly transformed the women in his world. Under his tutelage, Jerry Hall, a long tall Texan he met at Paris’s Club Sept, evolved into a golden goddess. He put Jessica Lange in gold lamé evening dresses after discovering her in Paris studying mime, and gave aspiring model Tina Lutz her start (and an introduction to future husband Michael Chow...

Homage to Wilson A. Bentley #19
By Yuji Obata
Located in New York, NY
Listing includes framing, free shipping and 14-day returns. Yuji Obata Homage to Wilson A. Bentley #4, 2005 - 2006 19 x 13 inch archival pigment print Edition 3 of 10 Signed and editioned on verso Yuji Obata was born in Japan in 1962. He attended the Nihon University College of Art and currently resides in Tokyo. He has won numerous photography prizes in Japan, and his work was first shown outside of Japan in 2010 with Danziger Projects at Pulse Miami. In 2003, Obata was compelled to photograph winter scenes in Japan as he stood in front of Pieter Bruegel's painting "The Hunters in the Snow" in Vienna's Museum of Art History. Upon returning to Japan, he traveled to the country's northernmost island, Hokkaidō, known for its cold and snowy winters. As he worked there photographing ice skaters at a middle school rink and a local speed skating team, his enchantment with images of winter deepened. Traveling around different regions of the island in winter, he began noticing the varied qualities of the snow itself, and finally became fascinated with the unique challenge of photographing snowflakes. Obata drew inspiration from the story and works of W.A. Bentley, an American farmer and photographer who adapted a camera and microscope to photograph a single snow crystal for the first time in 1885. Bentley went on to photograph more than 5,000 snowflakes in his lifetime, and his technique was so successful that it continues to be used today. Like Bentley, Obata was obsessed with the challenge of doing something no one had done before – in his case photographing snowflakes in freefall rather than on a flat surface without digital or any other manipulation. It took Obata five years to achieve but his breakthrough resulted in the capture of pictures that allow the snowflakes to relate to each other in space and size, creating dynamic compositions and scenes. Obata chose the location to shoot the series, in the mountains of Hokkaidō, based on its history as the place where Dr. Ukichiro Nakaya did research that led to his invention of artificial snow. His most recent book "Wintertale" gathers his photographs of winter...

Yuji Obata was born in Japan in 1962.

Sunrise, August 24, 2008, 7:17 AM, Eagle Nest Lake, New Mexico
By David H. Gibson
Located in Dallas, TX
Reflections on Eagle Nest Lake "My first trip to Eagle Nest Lake was over 30 years ago. I was captivated by mists rising over the lake and flowing along the floor of the valley. With a background in theater, the unfolding light events immediately commanded my attention. The first photographs were made and I was hooked on Eagle Nest Lake and the opportunities it presented for photography. It has become my custom during an annual August visit to Taos, to begin the day with a drive to Eagle Nest Lake through Taos Canyon and over the pass descending into Moreno Valley. The first glimpse of the valley through the trees reveals the atmospheric conditions for the morning. The valley is 8,300 feet above sea level. This high elevation produces crisp cool mornings with mists often filling the valley. Early on I had no idea that I would be committed to this ethereal place for such a long time. During those first visits, cattle were grazing around the lake and the owners of a ranching operation had allowed lake access for fishermen. I learned later that the lake was formed by a dam built by two ranchers in the early 20th century to impound water of the Cimarron River for irrigation. This created a two thousand acre lake named for the eagles nesting in the area. The lake was stocked and fishermen arrived. The Eagle Nest...
