The anterior face of the blade features an extended protruding angular border embellished with bands of tooled decoration. The ornamentation to the blade incorporates the contemporary engraved presentation inscription: 'Presented to The Right Honorable The Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne, Alderman Gilbert Oliver, J.P. upon Laying the Foundation Stone for the New Artillery Barracks, 7th July 1938'.
